This year I got a new computer with Windows Vista on it. Out of the box certain programs would just stop working before they start and I would get a message. I have to restart some of them instead. Fast forward to now, I have recently downloaded other programs from the net such as Anti spyware and other programs as well. Now, not only do I get the message at start up that the programs have stopped working, but I cannot get them to work either! My question is how do I fix this problem? Do I need to take my system to a computer professional or do I need to reinstal Windows (which I do not have a disk for) instead? Thank you for your help! Mike

Now did you get an error message that it stopped working? Also, among other things last Saturday my computer without warning suddenly dumped a toolbar that was on my system. I miss it!

I did not get a message about the headphone jack not working and I've gone through the diagnostic test that says it is working still no sound. I need to try the jack in the back but that is a pain. Yesterday I got the message that Office stopped working and I always get the message that Firefox stopped working.

Very weird, I have been tempted to buy a copy of XP instead, however that would be expensive though and I do not know if the programs are backwards compatible at all either. If things keep up I may call a computer technician and see what they can do as well.

I just got a new laptop 2 weeks ago w/Vista, and it's running a lot better now that I've run all the updates. There were a lot of updates and that will mess things up for you if they aren't run properly. I'm not tech minded at all! From my understanding one draw back is the extra security involved with Vista. I think humble installed some other type of anti virus and started having more problems, right? I deleted Spy Sweep after my husband had successfully installed Zone labs. Hope everything works out for you! I would get ahold of a Vista tech before installing Windows. Vista, I've heard, isn't compatible yet with some older programs. That shouldn't be the case if it came with your PC and the programs installed with the PC, in my opinion. Get a hold of a Vista tech for help and let us know!

How much memory (RAM) did your computer come with? Does that same amount of memory show up when you look for it in Vista?

I downloaded the anti-spyware software later on. The problems were there before even the anti-virus software as well. I have fumbled around looking for the specs on the system at all either.

Hi. I have a new windows vista. I received some cd's with it. I tried one, it installed but would not play. It just said the program had to close. I tried it on my windows xp and it worked just fine. I tried clicking on the icon and clicking on run as administrator and nothing. It is sad that some programs work and others do not. I may gather up the ones I have and mail them back to hp to have them replaced.

I have had Windows Vista for a year also and it freezes up a few times a month. I just can't figure out what the problem is. It looks good, but I would have stuck with XP if I could do it over. This has the most bugs of any operating system I have seen them put out. Hopefully they get it all worked out or just scrap the whole Vista and give us something else.

I had similar problem and called Microsoft who told me that it has to do with Vista program and there was nothing to worry about. So now I am less bothered by it than before.

That doesn't solve the problem though.

But they told me it's quite normal with most Vista users. Mine gets black for a moment and then it comes back. I don't have to restart the program like Mike.

BTW: where do we find format in Vista? I was trying to look for it, but since it's different from XP, I am unable to find it? Any one using Visa can help me please? Thanks!

Steve Balmer recently admitted "Vista is a work in progress" It simply is not ready for prime time and certainly not worth the money. Stick with XP as long as you can and hopefully the next version of Windows will be better. A bit of googling will show how many governments, schools, SMBs are ditching MS in favor of Macs and Linux. This message was sent to you in FireFox on PCLinuxOS 2007. Best Regards, Jon

ORIGINAL: besiderself Great info. But what am I supposed to do? I have a 1 yo computer with Vista and hundreds of dollars of Vista compatible software and hardware on it. I'd rather switch than fight, but I can't afford to... My biggest problems so far have been 1) losing thousands of pictures and lots of data a few months after getting the new 'puter when my dd attempted to install a webcam that wasn't Vista Compatible Ok, ok, I should have had it all backed up, yeah yeah...and 2) being unable to download certain programs off the internet because Windows randomly decides to block them without giving me any information as to why nor any options. There is no support for this problem on the website, either. Makes me very frustrated. besiderself Sorry to hear you have lost data and hit brick walls under Vista. If you choose to switch, you certainly don't have to lose your data files. They can all be archived to CD and read (the files, though the data in them may depend on having a certain program) from within Linux or MacOS. As for your MS-Windows software, a lot of it will run under Linux. My recommendation would be that you set up a dual-boot system by partitioning your hard drive (or adding a second drive) and installing Vista on part of it, leaving the rest free to install Linux and do real work. If you have an MS-Win program that just doesn't like running under WINE/Cedega/CrossoverOffice, you'll still have your Win partition. Alternately, though harder to set up, is running Vista under Linux in a virtual machine. And for most MS-Windows software, there is a comparable (sometimes better) Linux alternative. Archiving data files is fairly easy under Linux, as well. I use Unison and X-CD-Roaster to synchronize files between my working area, a subdirectory for synch, and my USB keys. Then I just plop everything in the synch directory onto a CD (I do this so I don't have to go through a lot of steps when burning archive CDs) and hit burn. Now, Linux is more difficult to set up than MS-Win, but once it is set, you usually don't have to mess with it in the course of your day-to-day use. I've found that using Linux, most of my problems now occur when I try something new (as opposed to randomly having problems while doing routine things, as I did under MS-Win). For a beginner, I'd recommend Ubuntu Linux, but if you are technically adept, you might try Debian Linux. Whatever you choose to do, I hope it works out well for you.

Thank you for the response besiderself. What to do? I was ready to buy Vista but the IT community was saying wait until service pack 1 or 2 is available. So I started googling the internet and found many people were having severe software and hardware driver issues. Many US government agency's put a ban on Vista altogether. http://tech.blorge.com/Structure:%20/2007/03/14/mega-blow-to-microsoft-as-us-government-departments-ban-vista/ http://news.cnet.com/Federal-agencies-ban-Windows-Vista/2100-1002_3-6166868.html?tag=nl.e496 Although these articles are a year old nothing has changed much today. Because of these and others articles I have read I knew there just had to be a better way. That is when I started taking a serious look at Mac and Linux as alternatives. Mac being more popular or better known was still very expensive and proprietary. Linux on the other hand was free and will work on my current computer and is more secure and very stable (no bsod's). I started searching the internet for Linux OS's and starting reading the reviews and user comments. I wanted a Linux OS that was totally newbie friendly and would require little or no configuration. Many of them directed me to this site. http://distrowatch.com/ I finally decided on PCLinuxOS, downloaded the ISO and burned the image to a cd using Nero. All I can say is WOW this is impressive. It configured everything including the network. Worked out of the box and is radically simple. It is a very polished distro with lots of eye candy. Check this out it makes Vista look like an amateur. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uplw5tlB1ag I now dual boot with XP pro and PCLinuxOS 2008 MiniMe
