I hate making these types of expensive decisions. Whether to purchase a new television, or get the HD box to hook up to my current TV. OR just rent movies and TV programs, not watch regular current broadcasting. Inormally get my news from websites, anyhow. Many tv shows are available on the internet.

What are you doing, and if you are tech savvy, what do you recommend?

If I have cable, do I still need the hd box, or a new TV?

the law is changing to DIGITAL TV, NOT HIGH DEFINITION TV

so if you have cable or satellite then you are already receiving a digital signal

it only will affect the few people that are using an antenna to watch tv.

Our main TV receives digital cable, so that's set. The bedroom TV does the same.. the TV in my office and my wife's office either receive the cable as well and or have a converter box already setup.

My concern was my parents who are a bit oblivious to technology and trends.. so I had to help them out.

So if you have an old TV and cable, you are cool to go?

But if you use rabbit ears, you need cable, new TV, or converter box?

I have heard that some HD ready tv's do not have digital tuners in them..you will still need a box.

I find it all confusing.

If you have cable, DirecTV, etc... you're good to go because you are receiving the feed regardless of how old the TV you're using to do that is.

But if you have a non-SD TV that relies on rabbit ears (etc) to receive "over the air" signals... then come Feb 2009, you will not have any TV stations.

If you do not have cable or satellite TV, but your TV has a built in digital receiver.. then you're good to go.

Of course many HD tv's don't have tuners, that would be taking money away from the cable companies!!

We have an HD tv already and get a nice HD signal from our cable provider on a few channels. It's a huge difference to me in seeing one channel vs another in or not in HD. Like our local cable all broadcast in both so Channel 4 is not HD but 404 is and it's the same station. You can see so clearly the difference.

I say if you can afford 32" or bigger HDTV do it. You won't regret it. GORGEOUS pictures.

Not entirely true. I'm pretty sure that all cable providers are still sending an analog signal (ours certainly is) for their basic cable line-up, and will likely do so for some time to come (there may even be legal requirements for that, but I'm a little fuzzy on that issue.) Satellite is all digital, and cable companies offer many stations in digital (sometimes all their stations), not to mention other types of TV service like FIOS, but there are still analog signals in the world of cable TV.

That's true. Not only that, but the coupons the government is offering for digital tuners don't apply to boxes capable of outputting an HD signal. I've heard of people who bought an HD-ready TV complaining that they won't be able to use the coupon to get HD on their set. ( Argh! If you can afford an HD set, you can pay for your own tuner!)

I got a 50 inch plasma TV and I love it. I love the picture and I also love that it is on the wall rather on a TV stand. The biggest plus is my daughter cannot smush her cheese on the screen anymore! I do not have HD signal but still the picture is wonderful!

I'm content to receive my digital signal via basic cable.

well, now I am thinking about getting an LCD HD. I have been pricing them, and before the change over, I may just do it. I watched a neighbor's and I was shocked at the clarity and color. She also said it never has static .

I'm more of a lurker than a poster here at Crosswalk.com, but this topic is right up my alley, so I thought I'd hop in the middle here. Instead of giving some long dissertation on the subject, I'll share a simple link to an article I wrote back in February of 2008 entitled "The Biggest Urban Legend of 2007".

I'm confident that article will help to clear up some of the misunderstandings evolving around this 2009 digital transition. Might I mention, however, that I did find out recently that there will be some smaller sized "local" broadcasting companies who don't have the resources nor the money to expand their equipment base, and what's going to happen with them come 2009 is still unknown.

I hope this helps, and I'm going to crawl back into the shadows and listen (read, actually) to you all chat. Be blessed! -- Mark

I voted "other" because we have Verizon FIOS and all tvs in the house (operational ones, that is) have a box, and we won't need anything more.

However, one TV is close to going bad, so we may have to replace it within the next year, and the replacement will be digital-capable.

I don't have cable or satellite. Rather slow on the uptake, I know, but I have refused to pay when I can get several channels for free.

Yeah, but as of 2009, you're going to have to spend some money (for a converter box) to continue to get the "free" channels
