I'm not really sure because I don't know how much I will get. When I first heard about it, I thought I would put my part in my emergency fund and give the kids' part to them, if I got some for the kids. My 15 year old daughter is saving for a car and insurance and that would help her, and my 17 year old son is working and going to school and pays his own car expenses and insurance, computers, entertainment, etc. so he would appreciate getting $300.

But then yesterday I got the flyer about it from the IRS and I am not sure that I will get any for my son because he doesn't qualify for the child tax credit because he is already 17. I thought that maybe he would get the payment himself because he paid in about $475 in income tax this year, but the flyer said that if you qualify as a dependent of another person, which he did, you won't get a payment. So I guess all the 17 and 18 year olds are kind of left out of this.

It'll go right back to them to cover a wee little portion of my tax bill.

Same here. It will go back to the IRS.

Meg4,

The child tax credit and the tax stimulus payment are NOT the same. You should be able to get the tax stimulus payment on all of your children and dependents.

Peace,
Anne

For us, our Real Estate Taxes is a Bill, so I voted ' Pay bills' . Truthfully, I'm not sure we could meet this forthcoming Bill in July, this year, without the economic stimulus rebate.

BTW, I'd rather buy the things I've had to put aside, like a new CD Player, clothes, books, a new living room Chair, and etc.; what the economic stimulus rebate was to go for; but our lovely State raised sales taxes again (to 6%), they raised our Gas & Electric Co. bill by 70%, and Gas at the pumps, as everyone knows, is UP, and groceries along with everything else has gone UP, and on and on it goes. Some of us on fixed incomes don't have a choice, it's pay the bills or lose what we do own.

Anne,

I hope that my son does qualify, but the thing we got in the mail yesterday said "Individuals eligible for payments may also receive an additional $300 for each qualifying child for the child tax credit." Maybe it is not the same child tax credit that is on the 1040.

In answer to my own question...we're not exactly sure how much we're getting. If it's the lower end, it will all go toward a smaller, lower mileage vehicle for my husband to drive to work. His truck is about to die and he works 20 miles away. If it's toward the higher end, we will also top off our heating oil tank, pay a bill or three, help fund hubby's mission's trip in October, and of course...have Chinese or pizza a couple times.

Crazy isn't it? But I'm glad to be getting something back to send back...
but will probably have to report it as "income" next year!

The IRS has already stated that it won't be treated as income next year

I voted other since for us it's going to pay some dental/orthodonture stuff my hubby and dd need to have done ASAP. HOPEFULLY we'll be able to use some of it to pad our vacation fund a bit more so our trip to Minnesota this summer won't be quite as tight as we thought it would be.

Blessings,

Garsy

Mine's going to pay bills mostly (along with a tithe). It's good to get "free" money.

I marked make a specific purchase, but really it will be helping pay for a purchase that was already made- our new AC unit after the old one died. It will help pay for a chunk of that.

I voted treat yourself or your family. I know there are other "better" things we could do with the money, but every year for the past 7 years or so our family has taken a two day trip to a particular amusement park in the summer (Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana ). It is the one thing that everyone in the family looks foreward to with great anticipation, and it has, every year, been a tremendous bonding time for us. We didn't know how we were going to afford it this year until we found out about the rebate checks.
