Hi,
I have had this question in my mind for sometime now... hopefully I'll find the answer through this forum.
What does "rest" mean Biblically? Is this something that one only does on his/her Sabbath day? I know it's "entering God's rest" but are there other biblical references to find out what "entering God's rest" means?
Some more questions:
- From a Biblical perspective, what can we and can't we do on our Sabbath day in today's times?
- Resting usually involves doing things that are fun, but aren't fun things in this world usually temporary (no eternal value)? For example, resting for me is playing computer games or watching a series continuously... this consumes my time without even interaction with people. I feel like this is an unhealthy way of resting, but I find it hard to relax doing other things like going on a vacation (I don't like sight seeing nor beaches).
- How do you rest and still be productive? Like when Paul said "everything is permissible, but not everything is productive/beneficial."?
- People were not allowed to work on a Sabbath day, but they listened and studied the word on the Sabbath. This means some minds may get tired, and therefore... it also means that "rest" does not necessarily mean "relaxation," so... what does it mean?
I would appreciate if the answers will be in reference to verses/passages rather than experiences.

I think one of the key things to remember here is that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. God knows that we, as people, need rest, or we'll burn out. This is a lesson that many of us here in America would do well to learn.
What rest means is different for everyone. It should be something different from how we spend most of our time. For instance, if we spend the week sitting in an office chair working at a computer, it might be a good idea to spend a day out doing something physical - taking a hike, riding a bike, etc. If our work is physically tasking, then, it could be a good idea to find a way to relax in a more sedentary manner - reading a book, playing on the computer, watching a movie/TV, etc. It's something the individual must figure out for themselves.
And, of course, all of this should be done with a thankful attitude to God for giving us this opportunity to rest.

Rest for me is ceasing from my own work.That is the work of trying to justify myself in God's sight.It is accepting the finished work of Jesus as good enough,sufficient.
It is also a rest from my mind which is constantly spinning,ever trying to figure everything out.It is the rest that God spoke of in the wilderness when on the 6th day he provided double the portion of manna so that their would be no need of gathering or preparing on the 7th day.
It is an acknowledgment that on the 7th day God rested which let's me know that my completion is already done even though I can't see it.If God is resting so should I.So for me I labor everyday to enter and remain in that rest,as quite frankly I tend to get restless and have to be brought to resting all over again.
