I was on a trip last week and traveled through Houston, Texas. While driving, I began noticing several churches that I have never heard of before. Maybe some of you can shed some light on them for me?

Catholic Charismatic??????- those two names really sound off the wall

Baptist Temple???- Baptist and Temple, what's wrong with that picture?

Baptist Tabernacle???? don't even know what to say to that one

Full Gospel- this one i have seen over and over, i just have to wonder, does that mean that all other churches not proclaiming full gospel in their title are only half gospel or a third gospel?

Seriously though, how did these churches form? What are these hybrid combinations?

Two of the terms that sound strange to you mark you as either young or new to the faith (probably the former).

Catholic Charismatic shouldn't sound strange if you understand that "Pentecostal" generally is a denomination and a "Charismatic" is not confined to denominations. I've known Charismatic Catholics, Baptists, Methodists, and even 5-Point Calvinists.

Tabernacle shouldn't be foreign sounding when coupled with Baptist. I've heard it most of my life and it goes back to the OT. It's just a place of worship, but, used correctly, is a portable place of worship

"Full Gospel" is a code phrase for certain Pentecostal groups.

Jimbo is right.. those names have been around for a long long time. I guess I just see more of it all being in the inner-city.

Well more thoroughly/ "Full Gospel" speaks to the folks that believe the complete New Testament is relevant to todays Belivers. They do not believe in the cessation of the Gifts of the Spirit (including tongues) as some of the brethern do. They also believe in the laying on of hands for the sick as described in James 5:14, etc. etc.

Thanks

This reminds me of the first time my sister saw a "Bible Baptist" church and said, "Isn't that somewhat redundant?"

Howsumever, I know folk (some of 'em Southern Baptists) that believe all that you mentioned, but would not identify with the Full Gospel label.

How young is young? I'm 34, been a Christian for about 26 years, and I've never heard of some of these terms.

Either they're inner city or they're regional.

(I have heard of "full gospel," though.)

I have seen these terms in states from Colorado to Florida.

I know that there are churches with these terms in California, although I have never been there.

I don't think that there is necessarily an inner city connection, either.

I'd agree with JimboFletch's explanation.

If you call 36 young..... I grew up in Texas, in a Southern Baptist church and have never heard of any of them except Full Gospel. I appreciate the clarification on that one.

Pentecostal and Catholic still sound like a strange combination.

Baptist Temple sounds like a combo of Baptist and Jewish, adding the tabernacle goes along with that one too.

I guess I just don't get out much

I believe the term Charismatic Catholics is a more proper terminology for these folks.

Thanks

Remember that "charismatic" is a personality descriptor, and is not just confined to pentecostals. Still, Charismatic Catholic is not a group I hear of very often and I'm 38.

I would say it must be regional or something too. I am 36, have been a Christian for probably 30 years and been in the church since before I was a twinkle in my parents' eyes. I've never heard of them.

Ok, I just saw the thread on Baptists, is Bapticostal for real? Never, have i heard that one and my Dad was one of the VP of the SBC.

Nor have I ever been to a Baptist church that had any charisma in it. I don't mean that in a negative way, i just haven't experienced it in that denomination. I now attend a Baptist church and they are still conservative with some members loosening up - conservatively

Catholic Charismatics found in Michigan and at Notre Dame.

Baptist Temple google search brought up congregations in Anchorage, Indianapolis and Canton. I know that there is one in San Antonio, Texas.

Baptist Tabernacle search brought up congregations in Auckland, Tennessee and Knoxville. There is also one in Liberty, Georgia.

I didn't bother to search Full Gospel... as there doesn't seem to be as much inconclusiveness on that term.

All that to say: Not just regional, inner city congregations. These are widely spread groups of folks.

Perhaps, as the OP... one hasn't encountered them.

The Catholic Charismatic was a fairly large building in Houston, TX. Granted, i only saw it from the highway.

The Baptist Temple, we have one here in the town I live in.

The Baptist Tabernacle, I saw that one in Shreveport, Louisiana.

I'm not sure that it matters if it is regional or not. I guess they are just not as well known as the "major" denominations.

I was just kind of curious what they believe and thought that there might be members on here who could sum it up quickly without a long drawn out history lesson.

IOW, I was been lazy about seeking this info.

I'd call you young. I'm 56 & been a believer for 41 years (also have a daughter older than you). I guess it's relative.

The charismatic renewal in the Catholic church began in 1966 and had their first convention in 1967 at Notre Dame Univ. My stepdad was an usher at it. It soon became an international movement that has done much to revive that denomination. There are charismatic priests in every part of this country and most majority catholic countries.

As to the baptists, I have heard just about every conceivable name for a baptist congregation. Where I sit I am less than a mile from a "St Mary's Baptist." Go figure.
