Let me tell you about a guy who goes to my church. I will call him George.

George is a citizen of Canada. He's been married to an American citizen for over ten years, in which time he has lived in our town, following all laws, complying with all immigrant regulations, trying to get permanent resident status.

This week, INS agents showed up at George's door and hauled him away in handcuffs in front of his wife. Apparently he missed a court date. George says he didn't hear about the court date. It's entirely probable that his attourney forgot to mention it or something. George has been in jail for several days now, and he's likely to get deported any day.

Considering the town we're talking about, I'm entirely baffled.

It's a small town. It's a "bedroom town" for all the major ski resorts. It's covered in illegal aliens, and I'm not just saying that to be vindictive, I'm saying that because it's pretty obvious. One of my friends has had his truck hit twice (while parked in front of his house) by illegal aliens, the cops said since they were illegal there wasn't anything they could do about making them pay up for his repairs... neither was arrested. One of the illegal aliens was 14 years old so high on cocaine (according to the cop who found her) that she managed to drive 4 blocks after hitting his truck with a seriously smashed up car and did not even appear to know that she had had an accident. The cop took her home. The headlines this week involved another illegal alien who keeps six highly aggressive pit bulls unleashed in the middle of town, terrorizing his neighborhood. There are suspicions that he uses them in dogfights. Authorities say they can't do anything to him unless the laws are changed so that he can't keep that many dogs at once. Last week's headlines involved the fact that an illegal alien who was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in public (the cops literally caught him in the act) had been found guilty. The obstetrics ward was shut down in this town with the stated reason (from the hospital administration) being that too many unpaying illegals had bankrupted the ward, so women in labor have to drive 30-45 miles over high mountain passes in the dead of winter to have babies now. The local school spends most of its program money on teaching people to speak english (21.9% of students were enrolled in the English Language Learners program in 2006. The teachers I know say it's higher now.)

The reason the cops don't bother arresting them appears to have something to do with the new ICE policy in Colorado which requires police to report to the INS if they believe they have an illegal in custody. Which is good, but the INS is apparently not nearly as enthusiastic about coming to pick up someone who is illegal and has further broken the law, and they don't have to pay the costs of holding the suspected illegals, so the cops simply aren't arresting them anymore to save jail space and money.

So, the INS shows up to arrest George, who in ten years has apparently made one single mistake, and not intentionally, who has done everything he can to legally immigrate here, and they leave all those people alone.

Does this seem unreasonable to anyone else?

In a somewhat related story merely as it relates to illegal's in the U.S. recently here in Fort Myers, FL there was an officer fatally shot point blank in the face by an illegal who was first convicted of a felony over 10 years ago. He was a Cuban National. The officers name is Andrew Widman, he was only 30 years old. He had three children one of which is a newborn. Officer Widman, according to reports was never even afforded the opportunity to draw his gun for protection.

More of the story is HERE

You may also note on the links to the story what ICE has had to say about the illegal non-citizen and previous attempts to be deported. It is a sad sad story.

Just a couple of days ago on the news there was a follow up story on ABC news about the raid of a meat processing plant in Iowa. (I think.) Apparently there was a big raid and several hundred illegals were arrested and charged with IDENTITY THEFT. They were using the social security numbers of Americans to keep their jobs there. Some of the company managers were also arrested for helping them do it.

Anywho...the reporter was interviewing all the wives who now have no money. A church in that town has been paying rent for all the families, and for food and medical care, but the women are distraught because their husbands will either be imprisoned or deported and they don't deserve it because they "just came here for a better life." THEIR BETTER LIFE INVOLVED STEALING THE IDENTITY OF AN AMERICAN CITIZEN? I SAY DEPORT THEM.

Absolutely. What a horrible situation. I hope his lawyer is really, really good.

We used to joke that it would probably be easier for dh to have come up through the Mexican border illegally, for all the ridiculous trouble we went through with the legal process. Our problem was running into a string of individuals on power trips.

Well evidently George did not foll all the laws to obtain citizenship or other immigrant regulations.

Ignoring a court order to appear will get you arrested nearly every time.

I have helped many folks get their citizenship, but you have to play by the rules; and do not bty the excuse that George did not know about the court date.

Thanks

I meant that in over 10 years he has not missed a single court date until now. And, frankly, given the postal system in our town (I keep getting mortgage statements, pension checks, and magazines in my mailbox, which would be fine if they weren't addressed to my neighbors, sigh) it really wouldn't surprise me if George did not receive a specific summons. I'm not entirely sure whether there was a summons involved, either, as from what I understand it seemed to be something arranged by his attourney, not something regarding any sort of violation or order to appear.

I agree that you need to play by the rules, but the difference in severity between what George is facing and what unrepentant illegals who are breaking actual laws, bleeding out our schools and hospitals, and endangering public safety are facing is just appalling.

Another interesting facet of that story is that while all the illegal workers got rounded up and put in federal jail, the owners have been getting away with all sorts of egregious labor law violations for a long time. It's not only illegal to come to this country and work w/o proper authorization, it's also illegal to hire children to work in a meat-packing plant, to not pay them the O/T their due, and to beat them.

The authorities jumped on one set of broken laws, but are taking their time with (if not ignoring) another.

-Dan.
