Readers Digest version:
Don't:

Bail them out of their jams (legal, financial, etc.)
Accept excuses and believe promises
Lend him/her your vehicle

Do:

Suggest 12-step and other self-help resources, when he/she is ready to consider change
Suggest treatment options along with above
Pray for them
Protect yourself and your valuables

lol, in a nutshell, that is correct. The very best way is to focus on one's own life instead of the addicts or alcoholic's. Family and friends who are involved in these people's lives are often soul sick themselves without ever realizing it. Enabling, tolerating, accepting it, all cause profound heartbreak and sickness. The solution is spiritual to a temporal problem. This is by no means an easy journey for the addict or the non-addict. It involves deep soul searching, a breaking down of one's self in order for God to rebuild and mold. The process itself is very painful, bu the results are so worth the effort.
