I am new to this board so hello everyone.

I have a problem that is bugging me and I don't know how to handle it.
I was at a cookout at my Sunday school teacher's house. It was a party for his daughter's college graduation. This teacher is also a deacon and his two sons who are in their mid-20s are teachers for children's Sunday school. I am not a member of this church because my family and I are in the process of moving from Pensacola, Fl. to Walker, La. I have gone to this church for about 2 years every other weekend. The other weekend I am in Pensacola. Anyway, about 75% of the people at this cookout are members of the church or otherwise Christians. So this kind of a church function...kinda sorta, round-about.

Here's the problem: My teachers sons and one other teacher who is my age, 37 were openly cussing. Not an oopsie once or twice, but over and over. At first I figured that it's their problem, and it's their house but then I relized that these guys are going to be my children's teachers.

What would you do? Confront the teacher (likely what I will do), find another church as I am not yet a member, or nothing it's not a big deal. Any other options?

TIA
Delmar

Hey! Wow-- This is a serious quandry. I can relate to the concern you have about it. My response is two-fold--a Biblical response and a personal commentary.

Biblically, we are to go to them in person first. If that doesn't do any good, we are to take someone with us and again try to persuade them. Then lastly, we are to take the matter to the church leaders.

My personal commentary is this: Prayerfully consider all aspects of the churches in your area and ask the Lord to show you clearly which church He has chosen for you. Our Lord answers when we pray.
Also--
When you speak to the church leadership about these Sunday School Teachers' language, you will learn a lot about this church by the leader's response.

Please give me an update on this, ok?

Alysa

I agree with Frog, I would go to them first and explain how their language offends you. They will either be receptive or offensive to your concerns and then you will have to go over their heads. It doesn't matter that you aren't a member, you attend regularly and don't want your children exposed to objectionable language.

I myself am offended by bad language. If this is the only way these "teachers" can express themselves, they need to spend more in learning English sitting in the classroom and not in front of it. Bad language or swearing (cussing) is the langauge of the uneducated.

If the language offends you, then you need to go to them privately. They may not realize how it may affect their witness. This is an ongoing problem. Christians cussing and I find myself doing it at times.

I'm not one to talk (I'm not a fan of it, but I let one fly from time to time), but this kind of thing is a problem. The fact that they feel free to speak this way in front of you and other guests is definitely telling as far as what's apparently acceptable. Regardless of how they conduct themselves in the classroom, I think a person's language is a reflection of their true self, and if that's what's coming out, then that's what's in their heart. If that's indeed the case, then I doubt they're going to have anything genuinely beneficial to teach your children. I'm not sure if talking to them is really going to help. They might nod and apologize, but what's the internal reaction going to be? I'm a bit cynical about such things, but that's something to be mindful of. Just because you don't see it again doesn't mean the heart has changed, and if your children aren't going to get anything worthwhile, what's the point of even attending?
