In John 6:25 Jesus feeds the five thousand. Later in that chapter He talks about being the bread of life. Which I would say means that by following and believeing in Jesus our spirits are fed and we are given eternal life. In verses 53-56 it says:Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him, What is Jesus saying here? This is before the last supper so I am not sure if it is a reference to that or not. Why does it seem like he is he being so literal?

Leviticus 17:10-12 clearly indicates that blood should never be eaten by God's chosen people because the life of the animal was considered to be in the essence of its blood. Thus Jesus was making a very startling statement, easily recognized by devout Jews, that if we eat His flesh and drink His blood, we actually take His (eternal) life into our own being. Think about it!

Why does it seem like he is he being so literal? You are right in saying this statement was made before the last supper. The last supper did not take place until a year later therefore I do not believe these verses refer to the eucharist. So the term in verse 53 "unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you" is symbolic of the atonement. Faith in the atonement brings eternal life to those who believe in Him. As we are saved by this faith, so we continue to live by this faith. In other words, by faith in the fact that Christ shed His blood for us on the cross and gave His body for us on the cross are we allowed to remain in Christ and Christ in us. It is only by faith in the atonement that we are saved and it is only because of the atonement that it is possible for us today to have a personal relationship with Christ. Also it is only because of our faith in the atonement that any of us will go to heaven when we die.

We see in Jn 5:47-51 that Yeshua(Jesus) is comparing Himself to the manna provided in the wilderness. This combined with the commandents regarding not eating unclean meats and blood leads me to believe this is not the physical eating of the body and blood, but an analogy. Nor does it appear to refer to the unleavened bread of Passover, but the bread and wine that Adonai provides on a daily basis to keep us alive here on earth. So, I would interpret this as meaning that Yeshua is the bread and wine that sustains us daily, but unlike the bread and fruit of the vine we bless Adonai for at our meals, He continues to sustain us day by day forever.

It's also viewed as a "seal." Somewhat like making a deal, and then drinking to it. Participation is what it is about. We have to participate in God's plan to be part of God's plan. Jesus did the requirements, we just accept them.

In verse 47, Jesus says, "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life." Augustine said "he who believes has eaten."

We call this a metaphor.

And one could make an argument for a "mixed metaphor", at that.

VERSES 53-56 HAVE A CLEARER INTERPRETATION IN CONTEXT IN VERSES 57 AND 63. JUST AS JESUS WAS SPIRITUALLY NURTURED BY THE FATHER, SO WE AS BELIEVERS IN VERSE 57 LIVE THROUGH AND BECAUSE OF JESUS. JESUS DID NOT LITERALLY DEVOUR THE FATHER, NEITHER DO WE THROUGH SOME PHYSICAL SENSE DEVOUR THE SON. THE DISCIPLES IN THE PASSAGE WERE EQUALLY CONFUSED AS TO HIS TEACHING. JESUS CLARIFIES THE ISSUE IN VERSE 63 SAYING "IT IS THE SPIRIT WHO GIVES LIFE; THE FLESH CONVEYS NO BENEFIT WHATSOEVER. THE WORDS THAT I HAVE BEEN SPEAKING TO YOU ARE SPIRIT AND LIFE." AMPLIFIED. SEE JOHN 15:4-5. DEVOUR THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS, WHICH ARE ALL THE WORDS OF THE FATHER, AND HAVE ETERNAL LIFE.

bread is your most basic need to sustain your life. JESUS is your basic need for life.
