Now, admittedly, this only happened today, so I have no idea if it will last. But as is his habit, my husband took me out to lunch after his church service. We went to a place we had gone many times before, and at this particular restaurant, I always order the same thing: steak with mushrooms, a baked potato with sour cream and margarine, and Parmesan toast. When I took a bite of the toast, it was very sweet. It wasn't nice -- sweet Parmesan toast -- . When the waitperson came back to the table, I mentioned that the change in their recipe wasn't a good one -- said very nicely, by the way! I asked for some other toast, "because it tastes like someone accidentally sprinkled sugar on it." The new toast was also sweet. Not nice. So I didn't eat any more but took a bite of my steak. It was sweet! I thought, then, that something in me was messed up. I tried a bit of sour cream, and it was sweet. So was the water and the bite of my husband's broccoli. I asked them to just box up my meal, and I drank tea while my husband ate. When I came home, I ate oatmeal, which is fine sweet, while my meal is in the 'fridge. I hope this doesn't last long. I did nothing different today, except that I ate some raw baby carrots for breakfast this morning. I don't take meds. The only vitamin i have taken is a B complex, which I often take. I am 59 and not in the best of health but I feel good. Any ideas? Ever heard of this before?

If it lasts more than a day, I'd suggest you see your doctor.

Yeah, I should -- if I can find him again!! I never go, except under duress! Oh, maybe I should mention that I am diabetic, and you know the other stuff, Manda. Even the mushrooms were sweet! That was really bad.

I can't see that the diabetes would cause it. It would be good to have it checked out to make sure that it isn't a symptom of something serious.

If it continues, I will. I dread it, but I will. My saliva is sweet. My whole mouth is sweet. I had called Thursday to get an appt with my chiropractor tomorrow. I will mention this to her, if i get to see her, to see what she has to say, if anything.

I've only done internet searches, but I can only say that if I were you, I'd be seeing my doctor as a matter of importance if it was still around after a day, in case it indicated an underlying problem.

I thought back to that, and the only thing I can think of that was different was the cantaloupe, soy milk, ice, and agave milkshake I had. Also, I had dropped milk from my diet, exchanging it for soy, rice, or almond milk, but I did that days earlier. I admit that I am really tired, so I took a nap and just woke up. I've been like that this weekend, but that goes with the other illness, so it's not unusual. When I awoke, my mouth is still sweet. My husband jokingly said maybe it was an agave build-up, to which I responded, "Don't even say that!!" But I'm sort of not laughing. No one knows that much about agave.

Well, that lasted about eight hours Sunday, then it was over and it has not returned. I have no clue what that was about! However, I got to thinking about the doctors in this area and realized that I would have kicked myself if I had gone to one. Bluntly, they don't know what to do with me because of that crazy illness I have that is rare to them, so going to doctors here is a ridiculous waste of both time and money. I seriously believe that treating myself has been far more beneficial.

Interesting (but yucky) thought! Could be! I will watch for that over the next few days.

Wow, Diane. Kind of scary stuff to think about. I will watch this in the future, and should it recur, I will take it seriously. Thank you for the list -- it will help.

Well that was why I said to you that IMO you should see a doctor if it last more than a day. Lung cancer was the strongest indicator for sweet dysgeusia that I found. Didn't want to panic you unnecessarily, especially with all the other health issues you have. Glad it's gone now. Onions give me a metallic bitter taste in my mouth for 24-36 hours after I've had even the smallest amount (not leeks or chives though), so I avoid them. It would be handy if you could find out what caused you, if it's dietary.

When I did my Internet search, I didn't find all the things you and Diane found. At all. I got very little. So I am glad you both told me about these things. I am being a little more watchful, because I think it could have been something I ate. In fact, now that I think about it, it could have been my new mouthwash!!! It is an overnight mouthwash, and perhaps I used it at the wrong time. I will check that out.

I have heard of this only once (tasting and smelling "sweet")....from a friend....turned out to be the beginning signs of "diabetic keto acidosis".....so you may want to find out more info about that for the future.

I read about diabetic ketoacidosis and was VERY pleased to learn that I show no other symptoms that are connected, other than constant (not extreme) thirst, but that is directly connected with the other illness I deal with. The thing is that after all the disastrous doctor treatment I have had, I admit that I am treating the diabetes myself, without drugs. Since it is type II, early diagnosed, I was able to bring my sugar levels down quite easily through diet alone, so I went off the meds. Now, there is a lawsuit over the meds, that some people died because of them. And that is a problem. Warning: unpopular personal opinion coming: The more meds we take, the more poisons we put in our bodies, the more poisons we put in our bodies the more meds we need need to counteract the poisons. It looks like a vicious circle to me. Oh, by the way, the meds they told me to take for the liver ailment: I asked if the meds would help, and all they could say is they may help. I asked if not taking meds might help my liver. They said not taking meds would likely help my liver. Weight their words! The proverbial six of one and half a dozen of the other!

I was just wondering: is the Northwestern USA the black hole of medicine, or am I just not as gullible as I once was?

It looks like a vicious circle to me. My great-grandmother believed this as well. She died at 92 from a fall and had never been on any medication long-term. I'm trying to follow her example. (Although if your sweet-tasting thing comes back, I would recommend at least seeing a doctor just to make sure it's nothing serious. My thought was diabetes when I read your first post.)

Hey! I think I'll go use that mouth wash. I am going to be up for quite awhile yet -- let's see if that was it!

Like I said, I don't know much about it...except what that one person told me when they found out they had it (they found out basically when they were pretty much close to death...it is a miracle they are still alive today). I agree about meds.....completely agree!!!! I think there are times when we need to take something, but overall we really have to look at the risks of the other things that they will change in us that could lead to something else becoming an issue. Sometimes that is all worth it (like in the case with me with post pardum depression....meds might be worth it in some cases!!!), but sometimes it's not.

The thing is, though, Lady, it is good to know the symptoms, because since I have diabetes, I need to know. I watch people, as they get older, having to take so much junk that they don't have enough money for food. It really concerns me as I age. I just don't want to go down that dark alley. By the way, when you write a short post, and quote:
"Some [babies] are just so inexplicably persnickety and unpleasing that it's easy to imagine that they were not actually floating in amniotic fluid but in pickle juice!" -Maggie (3cappuccinosmom) ends up beside the photo of that precious little sweetheart, it is hard to believe the quote!
