I know years ago, the Hinsons were quite a hit in south Louisiana. In fact, they recorded an outstanding album (Lift the Roof Off) in Lafayette, LA. We recently moved to south Louisiana, and I am wondering if there are any promoters or big concerts in the Lafayette area. What is the market for SG music here. I know the major Christian stations are CCM.

I guess the lack of response tells me everything I need to know. It looks like I couldn't even sell one ticket!

I wouldn't judge the crowd participation or possibilities in your area based on lack of response in here. Truth is, the vast majority of the SG crowd is probably either not online, and definitely aren't in the message boards. I know we hate to admit it, but if you look at the login names, you'll notice it's mostly the same few people posting over and over again. I've not counted, but it's probably a VERY safe guess that there are less than 100 total posters in the SG message boards. Probably even less than 50. we all know that there are more fans than that. So cheer up, there is hope for the area you are in.

There is a few posters but the majority of the people that check the message boards are lurkers and there are many hundred of them, you can tell by the count in the threads. For instants the Prophets thread has only had 520 post but there has been 21,300 hits there. A lot of people read but don't post.

Robert, I don't doubt that there are a lot of lurkers, probably not as many as you think. the 21,300 hits more than likely counts every single time someone visit the page. For instance, if I visit the page, then turn around and visit it every hour, it counts every time. Also, it may have 520 posts, but just from looking at the front page, of the 25 posts on the first page alone... 21 of the posts are from just 4 different people. I'm not knocking that thread or anyone. Just simply stating that we shouldn't judge our industry's popularity or draw based on the probably small percentage of fans that are active online. Sammy

There might be only 50 people who post every day, but there are probably 100-200 people who post at least once a week, and probably at least another 500-1000 people who mainly lurk but do have an account and post from time time.

Daniel.....You're the expert......Looking at the members list I see over 13,000 SG Members. Of these there are 675 that have made over 300 posts. I believe this forum started in April 2005. That would average at least two post a week from over 675 members. Everyone didn't join at the beginnig so the average would certainly be greater. If you checked the post of the recent members that have join this would be even higher. As I say you know all about this if I wrong you can correct me. Santa also is pretty well up on this.

I know the major Christian stations are CCM. Lafayette isn't probably going to have the big name SG artists often but if you check out Alexandria and some of the bigger churches in the surrounding area you might get lucky. Your best bet would be to find your favorite groups home page and check out their tour listing. If you don't mind traveling a bit you could also check out the Lake Charles and Beaumont/East Texas for concerts. The DeRidder/Leeseville area also has a lot of regional artists and SG events too. I don't listen to SG so I don't know specifics.

How do you determine whether a member has posted in SG? I think the members list shows all members.

Don't know if its correct or not, but when you search SG at the bottom left side it shows the number in your search. There are over 90,000 total members on the member list. I'm not sure whether or not the 13,000 represents those in the SG folder or not. Thought you might know.. I should correct that to be the Singing News Members List. One would have to assume that most of the SN members are Southern Gospel Fans.

All I know is that we have a couple of hundred posters on a fairly consistent basis. And we've probably had at least 2000 post here over the past 2 years.

As far as this thread I just saw South Louisiana in the recent threads list on my forums page and clicked on it to answer the question the best I could. There aren't that many people on these forums from South Louisiana. I very rarely click on the Southern Gospel forums.

I come bearing good news...I hope! I'm going to be moving to DeRidder, LA within the next couple of weeks and I hope to start bringing some great sg groups to south Louisiana. This is "home turf" for me as I grew up about 90 miles from DeRidder which is my wife's home town and I've been to many, many sg concerts in that area. In fact during my tenure with the Dixie Echoes we sang across that area quite a bit and have a very good following there. We also sang is what is going to be our home church, DeRidder First Nazarene and had a standing room only crowd. My goal is to have the Dixie Echoes(obviously) at First Nazarene sometime in early 2009. Also the Dixie Echoes have made an annual trip over the last few years to the church I grew up in, First Nazarene in Crowley, LA(short drive from Lafayette) and I plan on keeping that concert going and growing as well. My longterm dream is to build up a loyal and strong following of fans and try to have several concerts each year eventually moving to the high school auditorium. Thats my dream and I believe it can happen but I'll need the fan support! So stay tuned to these forums and I'll certainly let you know when and where we end up having a concert!!

DeRidder is a great place to live. My mother's family is from the Sugartown area. I lived there for several years. There are some really good local SG groups. I had a cousin who sang bass in one group (The Lord's Ambassador's) and another cousin who was a champion bluegrass fiddle player from that area. When my mother was alive I did keep up with and attend quite a few SG concerts. Glad Tidings in Lake Charles used to host quite a few of the concerts. That's been years ago though.

PawPaw, As to your original question, there is not much SG in South LA. I have lived in Baton Rouge for almost 6 years, and mostly I feel like I'm the only SG fan here sometimes. Other times though, I know there is a small and loyal following. The only radio we get is a small, church-run station out of Irwinville, that plays SG 3 hours per day (3-6PM). There seems to be a bit more SG activity west (Lake Charles. DeRidder/Leesville) and north (Monroe) than there is here, but we have a little. Regional groups (mostly from MS) appear weekly on Saturday nights at Parkview Baptist. Istrouma Baptist has hosted Gold City and Legacy 5, but mostly they have CCM groups. There is a little church here, struggling to survive, that hosts 3 or 4 concerts per year. Stevendale Baptist has had Dixie Echoes, Florida Boys (farewell tour), Palmetto State etc. Last week, they had Four Fold Quartet. Another church, Temple Baptist, has hosted the McCameys, Perrys, Booth Brothers, and even Greater Vision, as they pass through on the way to Texas. Having said that, I would have to say it is pretty rare to get a concert within an hour of here. Aso, I have been asked to sell tickets at my Christian store, and we rarely sell any SG, even when the promoters want us to. We are willing, post flyers and posters, allow our name to be used etc. We just do not sell very many, if any. Man, I could go on and on. If you would like to talk about this more, just PM me and I will send you my phone #. zzzzzzzzzzzz

SingLOUD, I wish I did but all of my family lives in the southwestern part of the state. When I lived in the DeRidder area and when I was a student at Louisiana College there were a lot of SG events in the Alexandria area. If you like the Hoppers I just checked the DeQuincy News and they will be at the Bible Baptist Church on July 25 @ 7pm. http://www.bbcdq.org/tp40/Default.asp?ID=69868 The church is just a block north of US 190 so it's easy to find.
