Is it wrong for females or males to wear makeup or jewelry (rings, earrings, etc.)? I have wondered this for quite a while, and cannot reach a specific answer. Thanks, if anyone can provide any insight!

Is it wrong for females or males to wear makeup or jewelry There can be a problem in trying to make a list of rules to follow. While most list of rules are written with good intentions, they often only help people appear good instead of actually be good. In a way, these list of rules often carry people into the realm of the Pharisees and people end up so pleased with their own accomplishments that they forget about Jesus. If a Christian considers wearing jewelery or makeup he or she should first ask themselves why. An honest appraisal of motive is more in line with the Christian life than a list of prohibitions. 1. To make others think I am beautiful, important, or wealthy. 2. To make myself feel good. 3. To fit in with others so I don't attract attention. 4. Because everyone in my family has always done it this way. 5. To stand out from others and attract attention. 6. Because my spouse wants me to. It is difficult to add to the list motives of love and self-sacrifice. However, we often do things without noble reasons and it is not necessarily wrong. The Christian should be honest with himself as to reasons and seek the Lord's leading as to how he should dress and adorn himself. For this we already have some leading from the Lord. 1 Peter 3:3-5 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Luke 7:25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.

There are 2 differences to wearing clothes, makeup, jewerly: 1. To look pure, beautiful, eloquent. (these are not a sin) 2. To look provocative, sexual, seductive (these are a sin) “Do not be impressed by his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. God does not view things the way men do. People look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)

Thanks, if anyone can provide any insight! I don't think it's a sin for women to wear makeup or jewelry. But don't get caught in the web of I have to be beautiful or no one will love me thing. If a women gets caught in that web, then it's very hard to get out of it. kim

...and I just don't feel pretty when my shoes don't match my purse (did I just type that?! Yikes!!!) BTW, in this verse from Luke: quote:
Luke 7:25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. The word which is often translated as "soft clothes" is "malakois" in the Greek. It actually means "soft ones" (see 1 Cor. 6:9) and was used to denote someone who was a homosexual. The verse could be rendered to read "But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in the soft one's clothes? Look, the ones dressed prettily and in luxury belong to the king." Now, to claify this different reading, the courts of Herod, Pilate and the rest of the secular authorities in those days weren't necessarily known to be too discriminating when it came to "gender-based activities" - Jesus was giving the Pharisees and scribes in 7:30 a poke in the eye for their relationships with the Roman authorities, as they were consorting with those who engaged in "soft" (malakois) activities. In short, what happened in the palace didn't necessarily stay in the palace. The fact that Herod most likely died of necrotic gonorrhea (the passage in Acts 12:23 which speaks of worms eating him and that he often journeyed to the baths at Tiberias to sooth the sores he had in his nether regions - see Josephus) point towards this...Just a little lesser known and cared about trivia, even if it is off the OP...

As with so many other debates, it is a heart issue. Noone can tell from the outside of a person why they do what they do. The outside does send a message, though, hense the make-up and the jewelry, but not the reason FOR the message. BTW, I told my husband...no real diamonds (although I love the one in my wedding ring). Glass crystals are pretty enough for me and I don't have to panic if I foolishly loose the piece. And I almost always wear mascara and a bit of foundation or I look tired and washed out.

Well, my wife has 3 rings on her fingers: 1) engagement ring 2) wedding ring 3) ring I gave her on honeymoon. I have also given her earrings. (My two cents'.)

Really, it is very curious that these ideas are even considered as religious issues, when there is nothing in the Bible that says not to wear either makeup or jewelry. This is very much like asking if it is more "Christian" to buy a Jeep or Chevy. If it is not in the Bible, it is a non-issue. Also, if we have to use our imaginations to make a scripture say something that was never intended, that is sin.

All true christians drive Fords...we all know that...gee. There are passages about hair etc. which point to being humble in our appearence and not self seeking. Looking good isn't a sin. Wearing so much perfume I can't see the pastor through the fumes....is. Having those beehive hairdoos which black my vision toward the pastor is. Showing more flesh than a streetwalker on Saturday night is.

ORIGINAL: SonInMe1 All true christians drive Fords...we all know that...gee. Now, waitawaitawaita minute! If we want to make car choice a religious issue, you MUST know that we would all be riding in a single Accord. I'm just not that religious, I guess. quote:
ORIGINAL: SonInMe1 Wearing so much perfume I can't see the pastor through the fumes....is. People have actually passed out, more than once, where I worship, because someone's perfume was too much! If we hadn't had doctors and nurses in the congregation, we could have lost one little boy, as I understood it. That's scary. quote:
ORIGINAL: SonInMe1 Having those beehive hairdoos which black my vision toward the pastor is. So move! Really, while I've never worn a beehive, I wonder if a couple of my hats might be a problem, but I don't think so. I am short (5'4"), so I just make sure I don't sit behind tall people. quote:
ORIGINAL: SonInMe1 Showing more flesh than a streetwalker on Saturday night is. Oo-oo-oo! Now, you've hit a sore spot. Should I go into my tirade about visiting a large, popular local church and seeing more skin there than when I drove by a ladies-of-the-evening habitat?
