I was on the phone with my mom last night; who's a very big WOFer as I've stated numerous times. Anyway, I was talking about how lightning had struck very close to our house a few weeks ago, about 200-250 feet away and how my wife and I actually felt it shake our bodies. My mom then proceeded to tell me to, "Plead the blood of Jesus" over it. I very calmly, in a nice way asked her what that even meant. This term is quite common in the WOF circles and unfortunately it's regurgitated repeatedly without any thought to it's meaning. My mom didn't really know what to say. So my question is, where in the Bible can this phrase be found and what is it's Biblical context? Thanks

Good for you sonrise. And especially being respectful to your mother. You won't find it in the Bible. It's a WoF mantra.................been there, done that.

Galatians 4:9 says, "But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again?" Ah, yes... one of the favorite sayings of many who are involved in Word of Faith'esque circles. Those who use that phrase in the manner you descrived are using it as a means to access the power of God, His protection, etc.. Firstly, there is indeed mighty power in the precious shed blood of Jesus. It is by His blood, by His atonement, that we are saved, that our sins are forgiven. We who were far off are made near by His blood (Ephesians 2:13). Remembering the precious passion of Jesus on the cross when we are struggling with guilt, sin, is both permissible and not a problem. Ephesians 1:7 states, " In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace." However, the phrase has taken or been given a meaning that far exceeds anything seen in the context of Scripture. And being that I am still personally involved with Word of Faith'esque circles, etc.. I know exactly how you're bringing it up. It has become a sort of magical charm, a magic phrase that people want to use in some instant manner. Something that is not taught in Scripture and can/does have some serious consequences. We need to remember that beliefs have consequences - good or bad. And often times those consequences can be a death sentence for some. When we fall into the trap of using something as a magic solution or supernatural trinket.. it brings the user into bondage. Something that we saw happen to Christians of the Middle Ages, etc.. Mixing magic, occult beliefs, superstitions with a side helping of Christianity. Hand in hand with this is the belief that we can personally rebuke Satan. We are not to rebuke the devil in our own power, but only declare the Lord's rebuke on him. Jude 1:8-9 "Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee." Michael the archangel is the strongest angel. Yet, when rebuking Satan he did not rebuke him in his own power. He simply said, The Lord rebuke thee. He did not invoke the blood of Christ and neither should we. That is a step toward superstition. If we ever get into a situation where we need to rebuke the devil, Jude gives the biblical teaching about how to do it.

What Earthless said. WOFers and unfortunately many Christians act ask if you say words in a certain way and you get a result. They treat it like magic. You say break a leg to a person that is about to perform and a WOFer will rebuke you.

ORIGINAL: Child4Jesus You say break a leg to a person that is about to perform and a WOFer will rebuke you. Have a WoFer sneeze... say, "Are you getting a cold?.." and they will say "I rebuke that! Don't claim sickness over me!" I asked a WoFer last night about the recent news on our local economy and he said, "I don't watch the news.. it's all negative and I will not allow anything negative to enter my domain." Dude, you're not kidding, these words have actually left my moms mouth. lol She actually confided in me on the phone the other day that she received a letter soliciting $9,999. I, only half jokingly asked her iif they promised her 999 blessings, but I could tell she was pretty upset. Unfortunately she's still traveling with MH in a few months.
