Greetings all!
I have been a guitar player for about 10 years or so, and have never liked playing with a pick. I tend to use the nail on my strumming forefinger and thumb instead. I know this creates a bit of a different sound compared to using a pick, but it has turned into habit for me and every time I use a pick it just feels awkward, no matter how long I use it.
Anyhow, I was wondering:
1. Does anyone know of any guitarists that play this way so I can listen to how they do some of their stuff?
2. Does anyone know of any brand of guitar that has really good sound when played pickless?

IIRC, Jeff Beck no longer uses (or rarely) uses a pick.

Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac.
I also believe Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) plays without a pick.

Mark Knopfler is indeed a pickless player and that was the factor behind his very unique sound. He claims to feel awkward trying to use a pick as well.

I've never been a good fingerpicker... i think the unbalanced nails thing is just a leeetle too much lol... i'm not girly, but I AM a girl...

Derrik Trucks doesn't play with a pick.
I know I've seen John Mayer play w/o a pick, but I don't know if he never uses one or just sometimes.

You don't need long fingernails to fingerpick. They can help, but it's not necessary. Unless you're trying to play classical or flamenco - you can't get the right attack from fleshy stubs.

Wow, thanks for the replies!
To clarify: I am not talking about finger picking only, but just using fingers in general. Strumming and picking. The biggest differences I notice using my fingers instead of a pick are a lower volume and not as much... brightness, may be a good word.
The guitar I play is a Guild D4 and it has a spot right at the end of the fretboard that produces one of the richest, warmest tones I have heard from any guitar. However, I can't get a good bright, crisp sound out of it and most of my music ends up being pretty... well... rich and mellow.

Stuff like that makes a big difference.
Personally I found that a 1975 Rickenbacker 4001, 1972 Fender P Bass and an 1980 Kramer Acsoutic bass, works when all else failed....LOL!
It made a big differnece in the P Bass when I removed the Metal Bridge Guard... the closer you you pick or pluck to the bridge also brightens the tones

I've read that blues player Hubert Sumlin, a friend of Howlin' Wolf, doesn't play with a pick.

I rarely don't use a pick, but you've got to check out the man with the 8-string guitar! The first time I heard this guy, I couldn't believe that only one person was playing.

Paco DeLucia plays without a pick. It's the most amazing thing I've ever seen.

Dickey Betts and Derek Trucks of the Allman Bros Band neither use a pick for their slide work. Betts uses a late 50s Les Paul and Trucks uses a more modern SG.

I'll be interested to see how they play, what they play, and just how great they are.
I only knew few Pickless Player and It's awesome to hear it. I forgot the name.

I went to a George Thorogood concert many, many years ago, and I seem to remember him using his thumb instead of a pick. I'm sure there are videos of him on You Tube you could check out - I'm too lazy to do that myself right now. Sorry.

Yep, Thorogood uses his thumb and index finger mostly.
Wes Montgomery, one of the best jazz guitarists ever, never used a pick. Very unusual in jazz.
And I'm surprised I don't see Phil Keaggy's name up there yet. He finger picks the majority of his acoustic stuff. Which makes him all the more amazing.
