What kinds of things do you want for your children from a Youth Group? What do you look for?

Good solid Biblical teaching and encouraging the youth to stand for Truth and showing them how to do it. All the concerts, special events, etc. are great. However, if they aren't taught how to live out the Truth outside of church, those things don't make any difference. Of course, I believe this begins in the home, but the church needs to help out because many of our youth are from unchurched homes.

My kids are past that age but when they were involved in their youth group it was important to have uplifting praise and worship geared to their age. We wanted solid Biblical teaching on issues important to them. We also wanted opportunity to serve in some way in the community and times of fun and fellowship with other teens. Worked well for us.

I am looking for adults outside the home who would make good Christian mentors. I want a youth group leader and/or sponsors that I can trust to advise my children with godly wisdom if they should seek out their counsel. I want leadership that loves all the youth with the same godly love, and wants them all to grow in the Lord. I am looking for a place with music my children will relate to and that draws them in to true worship. Worship is a very important part of the service. I am looking for mission/service projects. Teens tend to be so very self-centered. I am hoping they can make some righteous friends while they are there, but the other youth attending are not my most pressing concern. (Sometimes that happens, sometimes not.) My son can make friends everywhere he goes. He's pretty good at choosing worthwhile people and avoiding snotty cliques. Yes, there are cliques in every youth group. A good youth group leader can mitigate that damage. A bad youth group leader tries so hard to be cool that they sometimes help the cliques form. So to me, a good leader and his helpers are more important than the other youth.

I would echo what the others have said but not so much the music. I am not sure they do much singing in youth group. However, shadow's post especially was very good. Our youth group is called CREW which stands for Caring, Relationships, Evangalism, and Worship. I think they do a pretty good job with this. THey have service project through the school year, they have good lessons, they have fun. THe youth are a sub-communitee of the church but not so much that they are their own little group and ignore the rest of the church. Our Yp and his wife do an excellent job with the kids and I know they love and care about every child in our church and who comes to programs from birth through high school...and older. Our church has a 3 year rotation on missions trips: one year they go out of the country, one year they go somewhere else in the USA (like they went to SC and worked on a Habitat house or something like that) and one year they do something in our inner city. THey spend the week at an inner city church and sleep there and do outreach for the kids in htat community. Only high school kids can go out of the country but from going into 6th grade and up can go on the others. There are also other godly men that sometimes help out with CREW and care about the kids.

i have young teenage son age 13. When he young he used to be the cleanest fella around! In the last year of two, we noticed that he has become very untidy and unhygenic. Noticeably he has also become very rebellious. Since my wifes a homemaker, it has become very stressful for her to keep reminding him of his hygiene and of course, studies. This has taken a big toil on our family as a whole. Anyone with past experience on handling teens such as this? Thanks and Shalom
