I have some pretty bad ones. They didn't start off that bad though..... as the years passed, the attacks got worse. They've become so bad now that they're hindering my life and class ability. I'm going to have to go to the doctor soon about it, as much as I'd like to be able to take care of them on my own.

Firstly, you may find this thread closed as it could fit into the mental health encouragement thread. If it is closed, just hop on in at the end with your questions. There are other people who have panic attacks who post there. Secondly, you say that you've had a stressful year. It could simply be a release of everything that's gone on for you recently. And yes, it can happen at times when we feel we are fairly relaxed. Each of us will experience panic attacks in different ways and at different times. You've had one, you may never experience another again. There are things to do to help you cope with them though. Most important, is dealing with the stressful situations as they occur so they don't build up and release in this way. Ensure that there is an outlet for you of some sort ~ and again these differ for each of us. Talking to someone, journalling, exercise, learning to relax etc. Breathing exercises can help too. The one that I've found most helpful is learning to draw a box in my mind and coordinating it with my breathing. It takes practice, it's not something that you can simply do whenever you're in the middle of a panic attack. Start in the bottom right hand corner and as you draw a line up, breath in deeply and count to five. Pause at the top for a count of five and then move across to the top left hand corner, breathing out to a count of five. Pause for a count of five. Go down to the bottom left hand corner, breathing in, then pause again for a count of five. Finally, move to the bottom right hand corner to complete the box, again breathing out for a count of five. Pause again before repeating. It sound terribly simple. Many methods to deal with panic attacks are. The one I've suggested may not work for you, but it's worth trying it, and others (check out your local library for books) to find one that suits you. While it is good to think about what caused your panic attack and seek out solutions, remember that the more you dwell on it, the more likely you're going to be to trigger another one.
