What do you use for PMS (premenstrual syndrome) pains? I tried Tylenol, Advil, the pill and a number of other meds to no avail till I heard a doctor on the TV saying that Flaxseed oil is good for PMS. Has anyone used it and did it work? Do you know of any other med that could help alleviate PMS pains either natural or chemical? Thanks folks in advance!

Unfortunately, in my case, the only thing that relieved my pain was a hysterectomy...so I feel for anyone suffering from menstral related pain. I never heard the flaxseed oil for that...I'd be interested to know more about the reasoning behind that idea though. I can't even remember all the things that I tried at one time or another...but I know I tried a lot of them...natural, pharmacological and otherwise! Staying away from caffiene can help (of course if you're as addicted as I am, the resulting headache isn't much of a picnic either...so I usually found that it didn't help enough to be worth the trade off). a good heating pad can help sometimes. Also as strange as it sounds, taking a walk can actually make you feel better if you can get yourself past the first 5-10 min...which can sometimes take a lot of motivation. There are some herbal teas you can find at the health food store which are specifically mixed for such symptoms. (a good, knowledgeable clerk at such a store can also probably provide you with a multitude of other suggestions which could help you) As far as non-prescription medications I found that Pamprin and Midol (which contain some additional ingredients over regular pain relievers) did actually work some better than say Tylenol or Aleve which are designed for pain in general. Then beyond that is a whole host of Rx medications that a physician could possibly give you. (Darvocet, Lorcet/Lortab, etc.) I'm generally not much of an advocate for taking pain medication (I used to work in a pain management clinic and saw first hand how dependent people became on them) but if you take them responsibly only during that 1 or 2 days out of the month that nothing else helps then I say if that's what it takes to get through then don't count it out. For a couple of years I took an average of 2 Percocet every month...I never took them unless the pain was so bad that I just couldn't function...but when it was like that then that's what I would do.

Thanks Brown for your ample post! I tried many of the things you mentioned...I also tried Midol, but did not find great improvement. Midol is another form of Tylenol with some additions. The other one Pamprin, I have never used before. So many be I can give it a shot. I am going to the drugstore and check it out tomorrow and ask the pharmacist about it. Right now I am using a generic Advil. I wonder if a generic med is as efficient as the original one??? Many people including pharmacists told me they are. But with this continuing pain I experience for 2 consecutive days, I sort of am second guessing their efficiency. The other meds you mentioned which have to be described by a doctor, I would rather not use them unless a doctor prescribes them to me. I will check out Pamprin. I have never used this med before and I hope it will work out.

As for Flaxseed oil...I dunno what the relationship between both. I just heard a doctor mentioning it and actually talking about Essential fatty acids. But I noticed that this FSO has been very common among people and would like to see people's take on this topic.

I'm a little confused about what symptoms your having with PMS pains? My PMS symptoms are possible bloating, mental instability/highly emotional, insomnia, strong desire to overeat/graze is my term for it, grouchy and irritable. I found that taking a VB6 supplement helps a lot! Regular exercise, staying away from salty foods/chips. The salt foods will make you bloat. If you give in to the sugary foods then guaranteed you'll be pretty darn grouchy. It adds to the insomnia. What a difference exercise makes. 15-20 of a brisk walk. Sweat a little, breath heavy while your walking and squeeze that buttocks! LOL Other than a small crisis earlier this week, I'm doing really well and I'm being productive. Noticed I'm posting less??????? Hope you feel better! Get plenty of rest but get moving too! I try to limit myself to 1 glass of caffeinated soda and 1 16 oz of coffee 1/2 decaf 1/2 cafeine because I'll have a lot more problems if I don't watch the cafeine products too. This is just me, obviously, we're all a little different. How blessed you are if you don't suffer with this! How blessed you are!

I suffer from most of what you suffer in PMS and have been using the things you mentioned and lately abstained from drinking coffee - all in an effort to alleviate PMS but to no avail. I guess I will try whatever med suggested here to see may be some meds are suited to others but not to others.

For my cramps, I take the Advil and then two hours later take Midol and alternate for two days straight. If I miss a dose (which happens quite often since I will get busy with the kids and forget) then my body lets me know. And we are talking about missing taking it by about 30 minutes. I hate having to take that many pills over the course of a couple of days, but otherwise I would never get myself out of bed on those mornings.

I tried Midol once. Right now I am using generic Advil. I wonder if it's as good as the original Advil? I also take Cal Mag as well.

Thanks all for the tips. I will try out Pamprin since I've never tried it before. My goodness, the last 2 days I felt so exhausted I can't believe how PMS can wreak havoc on us not just physically but even emotionally.

Cut out refined foods and eat more unrefined foods. quote:
I suffer from most of what you suffer in PMS PMS covers a huge range of symptoms... if you are suffering from most of these then you really should see a doctor about it. Generally most women deal with some symptoms of PMS, there are few who deals with 'most' of them. The severity of symptoms varies tremendously as well. You may well have x symptom but when you compare it with y symptom, it's really not worth mentioning (ie if it was the only pms you had, you wouldn't worry about it). Perhaps you need to look at the major symptoms that you are having and look at ways of dealing with them. You've mentioned tiredness ~ you need to start trying to plan your life so that you can give yourself a little extra time ~ cook some meals and freeze them for the days you are most tired to save you having to cook. You also mention emotionally too ~ again, plan things so you have some time for yourself to do what you need to look after yourself. A long soak in the tub, gentle music, candles, whatever you like doing to relax that isn't going to exhaust you.

What do you mean by Y and X? I am going to see a doctor ultimately. I just want a specific doctor. My last doctor prescribed the pill for me which was not the 1st one to do so as have my previous gynecologist when I was younger.

Thought of something else that was sometimes helpful...at least some, like I said before nothing actually got rid of my pain...but any reduction was a good thing. Nuprin...It's the same active ingredient as some other over the counter stuff but seemed to work better for me than some of the others.

Thanks Brown. Will add it to the other med you mentioned to me the next time I go to the drugstore. I will ask the pharmacist for the wisest choice.

(I think) She means if you look at one symptom in comparison with another (x in comparison to y), x might seem negligible or not worth mentioning when you compare it to y. Then you should work on fixing y before you fix x.

I've used Aleve or the advil liquid capsules. I was also suggested to take calcium. Oh the exercise does help.

ORIGINAL: Cloak What do you mean by Y and X? I used x and y because there are so many symptoms that are associated with pms and you haven't really said what you are having to deal with, except tiredness and being emotional. I'm guessing, as you mention those that you find those the hardest to deal with. A lesser problem for you may be temporary weight gain. So if I take my paragragh, which you didn't understand and say this quote:
The severity of symptoms varies tremendously as well. You may well have temporary weight gain but when you compare it with the tiredness and emotional symptoms, it's really not worth mentioning (ie if it was the only pms you had, you wouldn't worry about it). Folks these are all American names. Well this is a predominately American site. Chances are the pharmacists will know what you're talking about ~ and even possibly suggest something if you tell them what your symptoms are ~ but you need to ask to speak with the pharmacist, not just someone who happens to work behind the counter.

Changing your diet, not just before you get AF, but overall, helps. I also drink rasberry leaf tea (make sure it is rasberry leaf, not just "rasberry"), ginger and mint teas also help tummy upset. Calcium and magnesium also help. Advil works fine for me for cramps, it's all the other junk that I have a hard time with, I seem to be one of those who gets most PMS symptoms. If you are having severe pain, you should see a doctor, you could have PCOS or endometriosis, both of which can be very painful.

Thanks folks for the responses. I will be seeing a doctor tho not right now due to the situation I am in right now. Right now I drink Chamomile tea Mint. It's just the fever and headache that I can't stand. Even tho I take 2 Advil after a meal, they tend not to do much. I agree not the first~ with what you said about endo even tho I got checked up last year by a doctor who reassured me I had nothing worrying. It is always good to seek 2nd opinion.

It may be worth you speaking with a pharmacist about this to see what they suggest... I wonder if you could expand on your headache/fever though? When do you start getting the headaches and fever in relation to when you start bleeding (if it's after, it may be worth you starting to take advil as soon as you start bleeding, if you don't). How many times a day are you taking advil? Some people don't take it regularly enough to help them. And for how many days? Some people will take meds for 1 or 2 days and don't continue, even though they still have the symptoms.
