What is your honest opinion of those who desire to get their ordination online? Don't look down on me for asking. Here is my situation. I've been doing Youth Ministry for many many years but never became ordained. The Church that I am presently attending will not ordain anyone who is not "on staff". I have some of my old students who have grown up and want me to do the wedding but I must be ordained to make it "legal" in the eyes of the state. Any advice?

In my opinion Online Ordination is not worth the paper it is written on, much less the bucks one has to pay for the paper. There is no true vetting, no accountability, and certainly no Spirual authority involved. If you are seeking to be ordained; then talk to your Pastor and/or the leadership of your Church, as that is a great and proper place to start. Thanks RC

Is there a way you can work with your pastor and have you do most of the wedding and he do whatever is needed to make it legal? For example since they grew-up under your leadership you share how much they have grown in Christ under your ministry and how you admire their love for each other and for the Lord. Challenge them to continue in this love and then "hand them off" to your pastor for the offical vows.

Doesn't your state offer the ability to do marriages I know in my State (West Virginia) there is a short forum you fill out and send off to the Sec. of State with a fee of course. Then they send you a license to marry. As for online ordination I guess that depends what the program is. I'm currently going though an online program from Nazarene Bible College to gain the needed coursework for ordination in the Nazarene Church. Its not an easy program and will take 3 years to complete.

I do this all the time with parents, grandparent, retired Pastors; etc. Thsnks RC

Here is the problem with doing a wedding with my Pastor officiating. I live in Georgia and the couple wanting to get married are in S. Carolina. I have no relationship with the Pastor of the church they attend. They were actually wanting a small ceremony with just close friends and family. I have no doubt that I meet all the requirements to be ordained. My church has over 4000 in attendance so they have set limitations on who they ordain to only those who are "on staff". I have their official "blessing" on the student ministry that I perform. I just don't have the piece of paper to make ordiantion official.

So what's wrong with contacting their pastor and discussing it with him? Seems it wouldn't be too difficult.

You really need to research this, as, even if you do get ordained some how, you maybe limited to the state that you were ordained in. I know my husband & I are both ordained, but we are only legal to do marriages in Ohio, where we were ordained. Something else to look into. Edited to say that you could also do something lie this: they could go the morning of their wedding and get legally married at the court house or by another legal official, and you could do the spiritual church wedding. You would not need ordination to do this. Look into it, as in some places even a notary public can marry people.

Hi, I know what you are talking about you feel close to them and they have a respect for you, being Ordained is by God so where you get your legal rights is less important then why and to who you put your Faith into. As long as the place you become ordained is able to offer it, I would say if you feel that need then do it. For it is not because of man or government you would be Ordained but by God. May God Bless you in doing His works, Rev. Mark Alan Pendergraft
