Hi,

My boyfriend and I play on a softball league with two of our engaged to be married friends. Our friends have been playing in the league for at least 3 years. They asked us to play with them this year and my boyfriend and I love playing softball and found it another oppertunity for us to hang out together and said yes.

So last Sunday we had a softball game and the umpire stunk. I am only 5'2 and he was calling strikes on me that were over my head. I finally struck out because I had no option but to swing at the next pitch, same location and fouled out. I turned to the umpire and told him that his strike zone was off and that I am only 5'2. Then I turned and walked back to my dugout. The umpire got his feathers ruffled by this and told my coach that I was not allowed to speak to him (the umpire).
I have played in leagues for the last couple years and there has never been a rule where you can not speak to the umpire and also most umpires can put up with a whole lot worse then what I said. So my asst. coach told me to cool down. We have a game break between our two games and my team and I went over to watch my coach's team play. My mom stayed at our original field to watch the next teams with the same umpire.
PLEASE DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE!!
My mom witnessed the umpire throwing his brush at the catchers feet and saying something vulgar. The catcher then ignored the umpire and the umpired picked up his brush and threw it down again and repeated the same worlds. This completely floored my mom but she didn't say anything to me till later.
When we came back to play our last game of the day we had still the same umpire still making the most horrible of calls. Our coach told our player to step up to the plate just as a plane went overhead. The umpire misheard our coach and came at our coach telling him that "this is C ball not A ball, get out of here!" But since a plane was going over no one could hear the umpire to our coach asked him to come closer to hear and the umpire poked his finger in our coach's face and told our coach "your gone! Get out of here! Your gone!" Kicking him out of the game for no reason. This upset my coach because he would not listen (the umpire) so he kicked dirt at the umpire's feet (sorta like Lou Pinnella does) and then said fine, he was gone and started walking away. The umpire proceeded to follow our coach for no reason whatsoever so our coach turned around and came chest to chest with the umpire who then lifted two hands and physically shoved our coach back, this upset our coach and he stepped back up to the umpire. The umpire then grabbed our coach by the throat which upset our coach who then went after the umpire. Both teams has to pull them apart.
Names were called between teams and foul language was used by both teams. The umpire called the game and then took off after our asst. coach told him to stay that she was calling the cops. He didn't listen and left. We reported the incident to the leauge, at least our other asst. coach is supposed to be doing this and setting up a time to meet with the president of the board.
I called my mom that night and told her about the incident and that is when she told me about the "clean the plate" comment. My dad wanted her to report it. The whole team sent statements to our assistant coach which also included my mom's statement but my dad felt that wasn't good enough so they have also sent it to the Parks Dept. for the City, the Umpire Association and something else.

So after this all happened we find out today that we lost the games because of this and that also our coach was being pressured to leave his upper level team in the same league that had nothing to do with this problem.

I was told that I am to blame for rilling up the ump up in the first game with my comment about his strike zone but I feel that if an umpire makes bad calls and can not handle being called on it then he should not be an umpire.

I honestly don't know what to do right now. My boyfriend and I both want to quiet the league. We do not want to play with people that allow umpires to attach players. What if it had been a woman??

Does anyone have any advice or no of any further action as a team we should take?? Anything is appriciate.

It sounds like you already know what you want to do; QUIT the league. You play because you love to play, but if there is fighting like that then I would go somewhere that was actually fun so that I could enjoy the game. Maybe if enough people quit they would do something about the abusive umpire...?

Yes...stop acting like a bunch of children! What a flagrant display of unsportsmanlike conduct by ALL who were involved in this incident! There were no innocent parties here...EVERYone got in their flesh and acted like fools...umpire, coach and both teams. Learn from it and move on.

32 "But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same...35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful." -Luke 6

In life, you will be surrounded by people who try to push your buttons, who will try to test your character, who will make bad calls, and bad assessments about you.

I pitched (baseball) for many years, and I think I was pretty good, but sometimes an ump made bad calls....really bad calls!!!! I certainly didn't need to agree with the calls, I had a choice,,,,I always chose to take the high road.
if bad calls made the game unfun...... I would quit in a heartbeat.,

Yep, it appears people from all sides messed up here. Keeping a Christlike attitude sometimes requires us to refrain from doing what flesh wants us to do.

Quitting the league may be the only thing left to do. You can't do anything about the umpire except for making a report to whoever manages the league. You can choose whether you will show a Christlike attitude if you continue to partipate. We can't expect everyone, even us Christians, to act correctly in all situations. However if my teammates and my coaches continued to act in a way that would embarass me, then I'd choose to leave.
