Every time I hear of cadidates going on Spanish speaking TV, radio and having spanish websites and all, it makes me wonder are their that many people born in the U.S. who do not speak english but only spanish to need this? Since you have to be a citizen to vote, why all the pandering to non english media (spanish only for the most part)? Unless they are admitting that non citizens are voting in large numbers?

Actually, you don't have to be a citizen to vote. Look at Guam. They got to vote in the Dem primary (based on the Dem party rules) and they are not all US citizens. Why did they have a part in the process? Because the Dem party said they could. However you are right in that one has to be a citizen in order to vote in the general election. But I too was somewhat surprised at the website. I thought with the Kennedy amnesty bill he would have had that vote tied up. Maybe his message in Spanish is to remind that block of voters of that.

Guamanians are U.S. citizens but that is another conversation. quote:
I thought with the Kennedy amnesty bill Which one (-: "First, our cities will not be flooded with a million immigrants annually. Under the proposed bill, the present level of immigration remains substantially the same… Secondly, the ethnic mix of this country will not be upset…. Contrary to the charges in some quarters, [the bill] will not inundate America with immigrants from any one country or area, or the most populated and deprived nations of Africa and Asia"- T.K. amnesty 1965 "This amnesty will give citizenship to only 1.1 to 1.3 million illegal aliens. We will secure the borders henceforth. We will never again bring forward another amnesty bill like this." - T.K. amnesty 1986

Nearly 40,000 noncitizens currently serve on active duty. Most are from Mexico. BTW, they pay taxes, too. Great to have them! Now to keep it on track, do they need a John McCain website in Spanish? Why? Do those who speak Italian have a John McCain site to go to that is in Italian? If not why not?

If the web had been around during earlier immigration periods, there might have been one in Italian, German, Alabaman, etc.

Come out to California, especially southern First generation immigrants, even when they become citizens, do not understand or speak English fluently, because it is a second language. Very few people are able to be fluent in two languages. A dear friend of our family was born in Korea and came here as an adult. She is a college educated professional and a US citizen. But her English falters at times. She doesn't watch movies often because it is frequently hard to follow dialogue (because of the frequent use of slang, innuendo, etc) common to English. Another Korean-American I know watches Korean TV by satellite for the same reason. IOW if you get your head away from FOX Republican News and think and listen, your paranoia might drop a degree or so. There is no evidence voter fraud is increasing or that it is tied to immigration in any meaningful way.

...to answer the op's question...it's obvious (for the same reason Spanish language advertising makerts are exploding). McCain wants to appeal to bi-lingual voters by using their first language.

Bottom line Tom is that although I forget the year it is to happen it is not too far in the future that Hispanics will make up 50 percent of the total population and will have real voting members of Congress representing them, unlike the Gaum Representative who can only vote on procedural matters.

I think you can look to a bi-lingual, tri-lingual, multi-lingual country in the future. I mean c'mon, all you have to do to see the future is look at the California ballot with about 15 different languages on it....

I mean c'mon, all you have to do to see the future is look at the California ballot with about 15 different languages on it.. Has that made California stronger? Will it make the U.S. stronger? So McCain is lying when he says "I think the most practical value is to make English used by all Americans and all citizens, and all who come here. The only way we move up the economic ladder from the bottom rung is to know English. And I would emphasize the importance of every person who comes to this country to become a citizen and enjoy its liberties & beauty is to learn English. And I will do everything I can to help them do that." How is he making this come true through a Spanish website? Why doe he not have 14 other websites in various languages? Which brings up the point again that to vote one must be a citizen and to gain citizenship through imigration one mut be able to read, speak and understand the english language. So is california admitting that non citizens are voting?

If they can't speak the language or read it than they need to learn it or use an interpreter. The business of interpreters should be a BOOMING Business in California and around the USA . America is one main language speaking people --- English; and written material, such as ballots, need to be in English only as well. If you speak another language, or more, GREAT!! If you hired and/or make available interpreters for non-English speaking people GREAT!! Or vise-a-versa, GREAT!! This goes for Mc Cain too!! But to be a bi-lingual, tri-lingual, multi-lingual country in the future --- NO; that's wrong!! And it should be seen as an insult to everyone and anyone who worked to become part of an English speaking America --- for the past 200+ years.
