I'm adding movies to my queue on Netflix, and I've heard a lot of people say that "The Notebook" is really wonderful. However, it's rated PG-13. We usually don't watch movies rated higher than PG. So I was looking up some reviews, and they are just making me more undecided. One Christian review talked about the deep spiritual lessons and sold a Bible Study guide to go with the movie, and another one says they have premarital sex. Another one said that it's sensual, but not sexual. For those who have seen it, what exactly happens in the movie that I need to be aware of, and is it appropriate for family viewing? I appreciate any help you can give me.

Hi Lisa! I have seen the movie several times, but would in no way call it a 'family film'. There is a sex scene in it and it wouldn't be appropriate for the little eyes! It is a good story, but they could have done without a bit. I would say it would be a movie, that if you wanted to watch it, I would suggest just you and your hubby after the kids go to sleep. But make sure you've got a fast forward handy for the scene in the old house!

I wouldn't recommend it for younger audiences. Like RaisePraise mentioned, there are sexual situations in a couple of different places throughout the movie.

It is not a family movie - it's a romantic movie that you might want to watch with just you and spouse. I think it's a wonderful movie and hubby and I really enjoyed it. My son who's 13 thought he'd sit down with us ....since you know...he's 13 and yeay he can watch PG-13 movie (but then he've seen LOTR and Batman before he was even 13) anyway, he sat down and then 10 minutes later....he was bored and left and did something else. I think, even if there's no sexuality in the movie, I don't think it'll still be a family movie because the theme is not really for the entire family but more for a husband and a wife.
And note--- son is not allowed to watch all PG-13 movies even if he's 13.

I guess there's more then one. I haven't seen it in a while. I just remember having to fast forward through the one scene!

The movie is very definitely sexual in one scene. Big time. I would not want my kids watching that. Sadly, much of this scene could have been cut, and it still would have been a great movie. Too bad it was left it in. Some people might disagree with that, but there are ways to get the point across without it being in our faces. I point you to this example in Last of the Mohicans. Watch the whole clip to see what I'm talkinga bout. No sex is shown, and maybe nothing happened, or maybe it did. All I know is that the scene is very intimate and has lots of implications. Adults can make of it what they want while it flies over the heads of kids.

Well, I guess I won't be putting it on my queue, then. It sounds like an otherwise good movie, but we only do the one-at-a-time deal with Netflix and I hate to waste a cycle getting something the kids won't be able to watch. I prefer to get only movies the whole family can enjoy, although my husband did have to put some Best of the Colts football movies on the list, which is a waste imo, but I digress. I'm sure he feels the same way about the Barbie movies the kids picked out.

I really would suggest that you get to see it with your husband. As much as how the couple did not start their relationship right...I think the ending is a great way to show about commitment to each other. I don't want to give you the spoiler but then if enjoy reading...you can always get the book and read it.

I might read the book, but I think with the scenes described I probably won't be getting it, not even just with my husband. In general, we take the viewpoint that if it's not appropriate for kids, it's probably just not appropriate. That's not always true across the board, and there are some movies that I do think are appropriate for adults and not for kids. I just have an issue with the thought that it's not okay to watch sex scenes when you are under thirteen, but when you are an adult it becomes okay.

Good point. I was disappointed when it came to the explicit scene, because I felt like a voyeur. I wish it had been left out. There are so many movies that would be just fine without those kinds of scenes. A really good storyteller doesn't need that stuff.

I have seen the movie and I agree with most of the posters here I would not let my child see it. I would not have watched it if I had known that the sex scenes were in it. It is such a shame that they did not leave them out. It would have been a much sweeter movie if the couple had started their relationship out with the right foundation because it was an otherwise wonderful love story (trying not to spoil the ending for those of you who might still watch it).

The movie was on CBS tonight. I only saw the last 15 minute of the movie. Hopefully you're able to watch it since I'm going to assume that it was edited for TV viewing.

I am glad to see this thread posted. The Notebook was a great movie. It was not necessary for the sex scenes. This is definitely not a movie for teens. A married couple might want to watch it after the kids are in bed. I remember someone asking me if the movie MASH was appropriate for kids. She thought so until after I told her about the shower scene with Houlihan. Please post more threads with tips like these. It is helpful.

They have a 3 way rating system that is sex/nudity, violence/gore and language. They also give you a very detailed list of everything in there.
