I am really looking forward to this movie, though I am worried that I may not go see it if it overplays Tony Stark's "playboy" aspect.

As a longtime superhero fan, I have to say that Iron Man has always occupied a spot atop my "Favorite Superhero of All Time" list (Nightcrawler, Captain America, Green Lantern, and Daredevil are the other occupants of my top five... though Spiderman has to be included too, especially after the 3 recent brilliant movies). As a Christian, the self-sacrificial aspect of a character is obviously an appealing trait, and I always loved how Tony Stark struggled with forsaking his alcoholic and womanizing ways in order to help those who were in need.

The trailers for this movie look stinking sweet. I like how the original bulky grey Iron Man armor is incorporated into the story along with the iconic red and gold costume most people associate with Iron Man. However, as mentioned above, I really hope that the movie is not ruined by excessive nudity, sex, and profanity. I am crossing my fingers for this one.

As a side note, I thoroughly enjoyed the animated Iron Man movie that was released a year or two ago.

Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" is also a great choice to play during the trailers!

Unfortuantely, the new Tony Stark/Iron Man persona is borderline jerk (check out 'Civil Wars'). He's crass, vulgar and almost unscrupulous. I guess this the new 'CEO' take on Tony. Less hero, more businessman.

That said, I have been enjoying Robert Downey Jr's take on Tony Stark. His performance as the CEO of a huge multinational corporation looks light and fun with just the right amount of "focused and objective driven CEO".

(Emboldened for emphasis)

I think it adds that much more to his character and the story as a whole. After all, you can't effectively show redemption without first showing sin of some kind. I love the bit in the trailer where Stark says something to the effect of "I want to protect those that I put in harm's way", which I think is going to be one of the defining moments for his character in the film.

I am really hoping that those involved in writing this movie took a hint from the Spiderman films (with great power comes great responsibility) and actually make the hero a hero. Superman Returns also did a very good job with this, IMO.

As for Tony Stark, I don't know that it was much of a reinvention. Hasn't his story line always been that he is a playboy/boozer/CEO? Looking at a 1982 'The Invincible Iron Man' issue #162 that I have, a friend of Tony's gets killed and Tony has to attend a dinner party where he has this really stirring inner-battle of whether or not he should get plastered and party the night away like he used to.

The dialogue goes like this:

Party goer: "Tony, babes, you look lower'n a whale's belly button. Lighten up, chum. Have a nip... chase the blues clean away."

Tony: "I really shouldn't..."

PG: "Sure you should, what harm could it do?"

T (inner monologue, staring at glass of booze): "Yeah, what harm. So I'd wake up with a headache... maybe not liking whatever I did... maybe not remembering whatever I did... But the hurt would go away for a while... the pain of watching Buddy Carson die in my arms... of being so helpless..."

T (inner monologue, staring at the city over the glass of booze): "Of course, the pain would still be there - doubled - and I'd be too muddled to do anything constructive... to find the thiing that really killed Barry..."

T (inner monologue, dumping booze over the balcony): "...and I'd despise myself. It's been a rotten day. But booze would only make it rottener."

PG: "Where you off to, Tones?"

T (leaving party): "To be a man."

If they put that kind of backbone and morality into the movie Tony Stark, I'll go see it twice.

I've loved the Marvel movies, except The Hulk(I hope the new one is better) and The Punisher. Though a little gory, I did like the first Blade.

I saw it last PM. Liked it a LOT, but I didn't know to stay until after the credits. I should've known. That seems to be happening more and more in movies today. I guess they wanna give people their props. I'll probably see it a 2nd time anyway.

Things I liked:
- The Mark II Armor
- Tony Stark's Audi
- The Mark III Armor
- Robert Downey, Jr did a good job
- The Armor
- Comic bits
- The Armor
- Jeff Bridges was surprisingly good as a bad guy
- The Armor

*POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT*

Alright! I saw Iron Man on opening night and had an immensely enjoyable movie-going experience! This movie is definitely worth a few bucks to go see, and will be added to my DVD collection as soon as it is released.

First of all, this movie really is given its personality by Robert Downey Jr. He really carries this film out of the "pretty good" realm and into the "excellent!" realm. I was reminded of how Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow made Pirates of the Caribbean what it was. Downey was hilarious and moving, and pulled off both the spoiled rich boy role and the redeemed selfless role equally well. All of the other actors were really performing on Downey's stage. I enjoyed the Pepper Potts character, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, whom I don't necessarily care for as an actress. Jeff Bridges was an excellent villain as Obadiah. Rhody was done well, too.

I loved the "easter eggs" thrown in throughout the movie; nods to almost all of the Iron Man comic story arcs and alternate storylines. Many of the different major armor types used by Stark over the history of Iron Man were represented well. From the Mark I to the Mark II and III, to the modular armor and even a nod to the silver suit donned by Rhody in one of the comic story arcs (Rhody looks longingly at the suit and mutters, "Next time, baby!"). Obadiah's use of the term "iron monger" as well as the hulkbuster style armor he develops was pretty cool. Of course the best easter egg was the revelation of S.H.I.E.L.D. at the end and SPOILER: the revelation of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury after the credits!!!!!!!!!!! Most of the theater had stayed and there was huge cheering at this point! The scene was Tony coming home, but something is wrong with his home security system as he walks into the darkened living room. The voice of Mace Windu then begins speaking from a silhouette , "You don't realize the world you have just entered, Mr. Stark." Then Samuel L. Jackson steps from the shadows and says, "My name is Nick Fury, director of SHIELD. I would like to speak with you about the Avenger Initiative." (not verbatim, mind you, but pretty close) Yay!

There were few questionable elements in the film. At the very beginning as the film is setting up Tony as the spoiled rich brat egomaniac, the camera cuts from Tony making a pass at a female reporter to them making out and rolling around in bed (no nudity) for 2 or 3 seconds. The next scene is the morning after, Tony is gone, and she wanders around his mansion for 10 or 20 seconds of film time, until Pepper meets her with freshly pressed clothes and instructions that a car is waiting to take her wherever she needs to go. The reporter makes fun of Pepper as being a gopher, but Pepper fires right back that she is just "taking out the trash".

Later, while flying on his private jet with Rhody and drinking Saki, the stewardesses also double as dancing entertainment for a few seconds of screen time in very skimpy stewardess outfits.

Alcohol is consumed by many people throughout the whole movie, mostly at social events and business meetings, and reference is made to what a drunk Tony was before his transformation into Iron Man. I don't have a particular beef with alcohol as a Christian, but some more sensitive brothers and sisters may think there is too much.

There is one D word that I caught, and maybe an H word.

The story of redemption and self-sacrifice really takes center stage, and Tony's transformation into a hero is well done and worthy of praise. Though the theme may not be as well done as, say, Spider Man, it is nonetheless the whole point of Iron Man: helping those who are oppressed and in need at the risk of self-harm.

I am out of time, but I highly recommend this movie!

Apart from Sam Jackson, who I love, I don't see what's so great about the post credits scene. I was mostly just like "Who's Nick Fury?" I had to go home and wikipedia it (I didn't even know what "SHIELD" was). You have to be well versed in comic book lore for it to mean anything.

I'm not well versed at all Henny and I got it.. it does help that we have played the Marvel SuperHero game on xbox though I'm sure.

I loved that John Favereau was IN the movie and so was the kid from Christmas Story, Ralphie.. John is Director and Ralphie is Executive Producer.

This was a huge test in the water for Marvel's new production house. First movie under their name and has opened the door to SOOO many other movies. If they can keep this caliber up they are looking at a great legacy of SuperHero and villain movies!!

I think Downey is a great fit for the suit. The movie looks pretty good and it seems to have a "redemption" vein to it.

So, do you think that the very end is telling us that the next movie Iron Man will be in will be an Avenger's movie?

Iron Man is set to make a cameo in the Incredible Hulk movie.

Sam Jackson looks just like the Nick Fury featured in the Ultimates comic.
