We need to know that we are sinners and are bound for eternal damnation, and that belief in Jesus Christ as the crucified Son of God can deliver us from that destruction.

'Christus Victor' is said to be the 'ransom theory' - that God had to pay the devil 'a ransom' to set us free. Any comment?

I do not view it as God had to pay the devil's ransom, to set us free. that would be saying God is controlled.
God is not mocked. God is the creator and loves his creation.
It has been by mercy from him, that us, the creation are even still here.
It is all about God not being a tyrant, Penal substitution is tyrancy, which is what the devil is a tyrant
Yes the devil makes demands, and is a liar from the begining

Christus victor is about his (Jesus's ) victory over the sin issue, your sins have been dealt with through the cross, all of them before you were ever born. So you can receive a gift , which is life, everlasting, and could not be everlasting unless all sins were dealt with, in order to teach you how to walk with God as they did in the garden, free from the devil. Only focused on life with God the creator of all.

Anyway, if one reads things with an open mind and listens to their heart they will hear from Their creator as to what truth is. setting them free to be in love with life, forever. And when they have adversity, for they will, they need not fear for God overcame the world. So then we would, should know with confidence that we will be seen through it, trusting our totally faithful God. Called excercisiing Faith, rather than asking with doubt.
Ask in faith, trusting whatever the outcome as Jesus did, never the less Father you know what is best. So no matter the outcome, One is protected that believes. proof in the ressurection, and alive forever.

I did look at it.

quote:

This is taken from the website link that you gave:

quote:

Jesus described his work in terms of a "ransom" being paid to Satan, but there is a trick to this ransom - like in Aikido where the attacker is thrown by the force of their own blow, through the cross, condemnation and judgement are "appeased" but in that very action they are defeated and made subject to Christ.

quote:

Jesus not only paid a ransom to the devil, but also to us. In so doing he conquered us and the devil, sin, death, judgement, and law.

This is what is taught on the website that I thought you recommended. You now seem to be saying that you don't agree with the view of Christus Victor. I find this interesting. Do you now believe the author of this website to be in error on this?

Christus Victor stands for christ being victorious. I read the all the chapters on that site as a whole.
In it's whole, there is a lot, of deep meaning.
Again I could look at it the way you are seeing it, But I do not, nor do I care what the author might be trying to convey.
I care what I can learn from God through reading it. Even if something is meant for bad from someone else, God does the discerning in me, and I am still learning to listen.

Anyway this is apparently not good for you. then maybe, lets just move on.
I only seek edification. To learn and grow in his grace provided through the cross.
After I believed and received, that easy, I have been growing to know this unconditional love, that he went to the great length to provide, through the cross

What does one need to know and do?

You must recognize that you were born into this world spriitually dead to God, in sin, without His life indwelling you. And that before God could restore that life to you He had to deal with the sin that caused that life to leave in the first place. Therefore, He sent Jesus Christ to die in your place to take away your sins from the eyes of God for eternity. Now, since Jesus has been raised from the dead, God can offer His life, as a free gift, to anyone willing to receive it. And for those who receive that life, there is no sin that can cause that life to leave because of the eternal consequences of the cross. That is why it is called an eternal life. A life that will carry you through this life and on into eternity even after you physically die. The Gospel is sin, death, forgiveness, restoration of life.

Recognize your condition of spiritual death and accept God's provision of spiritual life in Christ.

Grace and Peace

What The Bible Says You Must Do To Be Saved
1. Ask for God’s help: Rom. 10:13 “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
2. Believe in Jesus: Acts 16:30-31 “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” [Paul & Silas] replied, “Believe in Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.”
3. Confess Jesus as your Lord: Rom. 10:9 If you confess with mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
4. Repent of your sins: 2 Cor 7:10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation.
5. Be baptized: Acts 2:38 Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ that your sins may be forgiven. Mk. 16:16 (Jesus said) Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.
6. Love God & love neighbor: Luke 10:25-28 An expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “What is written in the law?” Jesus asked, “How do you read it?” He answered: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart’; and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied, “Do this and you will live.”
7. Keep the Ten Commandments: Mt. 19:17 [Jesus said], “If you want to enter life, obey the commandments.”
8. Receive Holy Communion: John 6:51-58 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever.”
9. Pursue holiness: Heb. 12:14 Make every effort to…be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. James 1:21 Get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent, and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. Rom. 6:22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.
10. Do God’s will: p Matt. 7:21 [Jesus said], “Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father which is in heaven.” 1 John 2:17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. Matt. 12:50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.
11. Obey Christ: Heb. 5:9 [Jesus is] the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. Acts 3:23 Anyone who does not listen to him will be complete cut off.
12. Do good works: Rom. 2:6-7 [On the day of judgment] God will give to each person according to what he has done. To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. James 2:14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?…Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action is dead…You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. (also, Matt. 25:31-46)
13. Share in Christ’s suffering: Rom. 8:17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
14. Die in a state of grace: Heb. 6:4-6 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, if they fall away,* to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again ad subjecting him to public disgrace. Note: To fall away, in the Greek language of the New Testament, expresses the idea of irrevocably turning one’s back on the gospel.

What The Bible Says You Must Do To Be Saved
Wow, loco79, are you really serious about the 14 steps of doing to reach salvation? I am as staunch an Arminian as anybody posting on these forums, but I have never seen such a laundry list of do this and do that in order to be saved! How exactly does a depraved, unregenerate, lost soul accomplish all these works before s/he can be saved? And how does anyone really know if they are truly saved until the moment they die if this is what's required?

Loco 79, I am a bit confused, the bible tells us that we are saved by grace through faith, NOT OF WORKS, lest any man should boast (Eph2:8-9). Why must we do all these works in order to be saved. Now I am not saying that most of the things that you wrote wouldn't be good fruit from a good tree but as far as a need for salvation, I don't think so. Did the theif on the cross become baptized? or take communion? etc?
The bible teaches that as a unregenerate soul we would be unable to do any of these things from our own will! Rom 9: 15-26 shows us that it is all through God's mercy and grace that we are saved. Anyhow Ezk 36:26-35 is a good example of how we are saved.

If all the scripture I had was Ezekiel 36:26-35, I would have no idea how to get saved.

There are many forums that talk about salvation in great detail. My whole point was just to give a list of verses that tell us what we are supposed to do. Not what we feel like doing. I am not in the mood for faith versus works and the whole savlation procces right now.

I believe that I fairly gave a list of things God commands us to do, such as eat the bread, follow the commandments and so on. God has commanded us to follow him and all of his teachings, I just gave a list for some that might not know exactly what that means. This is by no means complete, just something to help jumpstart a continued journey in Christ. Feel free to add to the list, like I said there are many other places that go into each on in depth, and what each denomination believes. This if for those who might not realize Jesus requires much from us as true followers.

I don't know, loco, but Luke 9:23 seems pretty straightforward to me - Then Jesus said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me." No 14 steps listed in that verse!

All of the things I have listed are commands from God, not suggestions. He doesnt say if you want to follow the commandments, he says keep them. He doesnt say if you feel like eating the bread, he tells to have life we must eat the bread.

I am confident all of the things i listed were commands not suggestions, to follow it we feel it is for us. I am not taking away from any scripture or adding things, these are what we were told to follow. And you can take these however you want. I just thought that the list might be helpful to some of our fellow brothers and sisters.

If you have alredy encountered these and walk with Christ then none of these should be offesive. Many of have encountered most if not all of these and take away different meanings for each one. You decide the relevance of each one, I just supplied a list of scripture, you are the one who must apply it accordingly

Simple as ABC

Admit-“[Jesus] proved He had a valid claim [to His Deity] but His own rejected His claim yet as many as receives His message; to them he claimed the right to become redeemed of God and appropriate His Name.“ John 1:11,12

Believe-“[you can be] freed from the arrogance that enslaves you [and] come into His obedience resulting in purification and Eternal Life. For the wages of sin is death but the free gift of is Eternal Life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 3:22,23

Confess-
“[His message] is near you, in your mouth and in your heart"--that is, the word of faith which we are preaching that if you confess [obedience to] Jesus as Lord with your mouth and you will be saved. For with the heart a person believes resulting in righteousness and with his mouth he confesses resulting in [obedience].” Romans 10:8-10

What does one need to know and do?

Let's ask Peter! He is the one that God gave the keys to the kingdom right? Let's see what he has to say about it!

That's what the men at Jerusalem did. They asked Peter how to be saved. Peter had just finished preaching to them and declaring that they had crucified the Messiah.

This is from Acts chapter 2:

37 Now when they heard this, they were cut in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

They asked the same question you asked, "What should we do?"

Here is his response:

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

There it is! That is the answer! You must repent, be baptized, and you will receive the Holy Ghost!

Some people don't believe that you have to have the Holy Ghost (or Holy Spirit) to go to heaven.

My question then is this: How will you be raised from the dead to meet him in the air? Rom 8:11 says that he is going to raise us up BY HIS SPIRIT THAT DWELLS IN US! If it's not dwelling in you, what is he going to use to raise you up?

So the conclusion? To be saved you must repent (Luke 13:33), be baptized (Mark 16:16), and recieve the Holy Ghost (Rom 8:11)!

I know that it's not a "popular" belief and I am sure someone is going begin to refute it but just remember, those are not my words. They are Peter's!

Actually, they are the words of God given to Peter to record for the direction of the Church. Anywho, there is nothing wrong with the verses you are using. Just remember that he had provided background information about Jesus that made these verses more clear.

To be more specific, you need to meet our risen Lord and know that you've met him. John 17:3, "Now eternal life is this; that they know you the one true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."
