In need of Christian bereavement resources - 4/23/2008 4:06:22 PM

My beloved father passed away 3 weeks ago from injuries he suffered in a terrible fall at home. In addition to the normal grief of losing a parent (and husband) whom we deeply loved, we also have feelings of shock and numbness due to the nature of his accident and the suddenness of his passing. He was 88 but still quite strong and healthy in body and mind, very active and full of life. His accident, his injuries, and his sudden passing have left us numb with shock and we're just beginning to return to "regular" life and begin the grieving process.

He was not a believer at the time of his accident, but we believe that he accepted the Lord as a result of hearing the Gospel while he was still alert the following week. (I don't want to go into all the details about that now, but specific circumstances cannot be explained any other way -- except perhaps by a skeptical unbeliever.)

I'm here to ask for reliable, solid Biblical resources to help us through the grieving process, specifically books and any internet sites. I am familiar with the typical world's view of grieving and I know that many if not all of those emotions are normal. I'm looking for resources to help me sort things out from God's point of view -- normal emotions and duration of healthy grieving, talking to others, giving ourselves space to grieve, etc. At times I feel completely overwhelmed with feelings, and at other times I feel just numb, then I remember his accident and the feeling of being punched in the stomach hits me again. At other times, I remember the unexplainable circumstances and believe that God allowed them to happen to lead my dad to Him, which gives me great comfort. Then, the next morning, the emotional rollercoaster begins again starting with wondering if the past few weeks were just a bad nightmare, then coming to terms with reality, and asking for comfort and reassurance all over again.

Many thanks in advance.

My heart goes out to you. I pray the Lord (who is the ultimate Comforter) would bring you peace.

My mother died two years ago following a fall. That fall was the last straw to her already weakened body and led to her death two months later. We were blessed to have the services of Hospice during those last months and were grateful to God for them. They aren't Christian of course, but if you Google them they have a lot of information on death and the grieving process. We found it to be extremely helpful.

Also, I often read the story of Jesus and Lazareth. Our dear Lord wept with Mary, Martha and the others at the sight of their grieving over Lazareth.

You and your family are in my heart and prayers...

I know the guy who started this - I actually was in counseling with him for awhile.

You are in my prayers.

Thank you so much.

Kat_D - I printed the Guide to Grief and shared it with my family. It is very helpful, thanks.

Sorry for your loss. I started an thread in General Faith titled Mourning. We've had a few deaths within 1 year, some were believers and some some so sure, but all in all they will be missed. Don't know if you'd like to share in that thrwad or not, but I brought it up.
