A friend of mine is getting into this guy's teachings.
He's the author of "A More Excellent Way" which discusses spiritual roots of physical ailments. Basically, it sounds like the guy believes that most (if not all) environmentally induced illnesses - everything from allergies to epilepsy to fibromyalgia to cancer - have a spiritual root, and thus one can be cured by breaking the sin/stronghold. Other ideas:
- KJV Only
- Generational curses (some of which lead to the illnesses)
- Demon oppression/possession of believers (I'm not sure how far he goes with this, except that many of the illnesses are demon-induced). The correct rendering of 2 Cor 5:17 is that we're in the process of becoming new creations, not that it's a one-time done deal, so thus Christians can be possessed if they're not far along in their growth
- One way demons can have entry/access is via problems at birth; specifically, breech births and when the cord is wrapped around the baby's head/neck
- The 3 "heavenlies": the first heaven is the physical realm; the second heavenly is the demonic realm; the third is God/angelic realm
- Gap theory: the ice age 13,000 years ago was God's judgment on the world at that time. The people who weren't Christians (or whatever) are some of those who oppress us now. So demons are not only the fallen angels but also the fallen humans from the Gap World (my term).
- He is "word of faith" in that your words can become self-fulfilling prophecies. If you constantly tell yourself you're a failure, you'll achieve your self-image, that type of thing. I don't know that he goes further than that.
The guy supposedly is big into Greek and Hebrew, and he was also a medical student. My friend said that the guy has Scriptural support for everything he believes. I'm not sure what to think of him, although a lot of his ideas certainly don't sit right with me. When my friend was talking about all this, I felt really skeptical but didn't want to voice all my doubts.  Some things sound great - I mean, I can see how fear, for example, can cause larger amounts of hormones to be released into the body, causing physical problems. But a lot of the rest of this stuff seems way too wacky.
He pastors a church in Georgia. Web site is beinhealth.com although there's not much on it (no statement of faith, etc.). The best page there is probably the History page. He does 1 week seminars dealing with all this stuff, which is where my friend just returned from and is thus really hyped about all this.
As to what this thread is about, it's not really to confirm/deny the ideas I listed, although I suppose one could do that, too. It's more to get the word out there, perhaps get input from others that have studied this guy's doctrine, etc.

There is that, of course. But I don't know if the verses actually meant that. Typically, it is verses like "life and death are in the power of the tongue" should be taken as meaning that things like gossip can destroy people's lives. Ooorrr, kings in OT times could order the deaths of people on a whim. My opinion.
"Faith" was often a word encapsulating an entire concept, not a metaphysical/spiritualized meaning. Typically, IMHO, it meant the God/Christ in whom we put our faith, not the metaphysical power of faith the faith force itself.

The Gap theory was popularized in the early 1900s in some writings of CI Schofield. It was the conjecture of a good Christain man who tried to explain the claims of Darwinian evolution which was making headway during his life time. I would dare say it has been thoroughly discredited long ago. Yes, I used to believe in it when I was a teenager.

One way to get the guy to take another look at this is to check the guy's Greek/Hebrew credentials. All kinds of cultic people sling around Greek and Hebrew terms. Of course, it impresses those who are poorly taught. It really means nothing because it is not difficult to find quite contradictory Greek/Hebrew word studies that teach anything you want. Take your pick.
