I was wondering if anyone knew where I could just get a standard text KJV Bible. I want one to study out of, not one for my computer or anything like that. I bought a regular Nelson KJV Bible, with no cross references or commentary, but I'm not sure if this is the Authorized Version? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if it is the AV is there any way that I could tell? Thanks for any help.

Jordan, the KJV is also known as the Authorized Version. If you have a KJV it's the AV.

As I understand it, it was never offically authorized, so it doesn't matter which revision you have, people still call it the AV.

So basically it's all the same, besides a few spelling errors?

The KJVOs will tell you that the only changes that have been made to the KJV since 1611 are spelling error corrections.

There are non-KJVOs who will make a big deal about the differences between the 1611 and the various revisions because they are trying to make a point. Many KJVOs will not tolerate any revision whatsoever (and have no clue that the version they are reading is not the original KJV version). They are unaware, or ignore the fact that no Biblical manuscript known to be in existence is an exact verbal match to the KJV textually (I'm talking textual differences, not differences because of translation).

So, if you have people telling you that you should make sure you have the "right" version of the KJV, I'd guess it is either some KJVO splinter group who has gotten super "only", or some non-KJVO who has been involved in the translation debate and making that argument because he/she is trying to make a point.

The truth is, it was not only "spelling errors" that were "corrected" in the revisions. Other changes were made - as far as I know they were all translational and not textual, meaning they used a different word to translate the Greek or Hebrew word. As far as I know, none of the changes were because the revisers accepted a different textual variant than the one chosen by the KJV translators. And, none of the changes are really significant - unless of course you are one of those KJVOs who claim that the KJV is exactly verbatum with the original manuscripts.

Oh ok, thank you so much for clearing that up. What is with all the controversy on the NKJV Bible? I have seen a website that tears that translation apart...

That website is put up by the KJVOs who have an agenda - those who won't tolerate any change whatsoever.

Hey, have you ever taken an English lit class where you have had to read Chaucer's Canterbury Tales or Beowulf as originally written? It's extremely hard, if not impossible, to do for a person living today, without some instruction in the older English. This is what will happen if that group of KJVOs gets their way - we'd have a Bible we couldn't read and we'd be dependent on the pastors to explain God's word to us.

In Acts 17, the men of Berea were commended because whatever Paul and Silas taught them, they would go and search the scriptures to see if the teachings were correct. We have the same responsibility, but we can't do it if the scriptures are kept in a language we can't read. I think this is a big mistake that was made by the Catholic church when they insisted the Bible be kept in the Latin version, when many people no longer spoke Latin.

Even today, I've seen some false teaching based on the teacher's misunderstanding of the language in the KJV. It will only get worse as the English language changes.

Here's a passage from John 15 from Wycliffe's translation from 1392:

quote:

1 These thingis Y haue spokun to you, that ye be not sclaundrid. 2 Thei schulen make you with outen the synagogis, but the our cometh, that ech man that sleeth you, deme that he doith seruyce to God. 3 And thei schulen do to you these thingis, for thei han not knowun the fadir, nether me. 4 But these thingis Y spak to you, that whanne the our `of hem schal come, ye haue mynde, that Y seide to you. 5 Y seide not to you these thingis fro the bigynnyng, for Y was with you. And now Y go to hym that sente me, and no man of you axith me, Whidur `thou goist? 6 but for Y haue spokun to you these thingis, heuynesse hath fulfillid youre herte.

Do you have access to an NIV? If you do, I recommend that you take the time to page through the New Testament, looking at the footnotes. When you see an Old Testament scripture mentioned, look through the New Testament passage to see the Old Testament quote, and then compare that quote with the Old Testament verse. Check it out in the KJV. I'm telling you to use the NIV because I know that translation has the footnotes that indicate what Old Testament verse is being quoted. But, do the comparisons in the KJV, because that is what the KJVOs think is the only correct version. You will find that even in the KJV, some of the Old Testament quotes do not match word for word. Sometimes this might be because the New Testament writer was quoting from memory, or paraphrasing, but there are plenty of times when it is clear that the Old Testament quote came from a Bible version that is different from the version translated in the Old Testament of the KJV.

This shows to me that God does not restrict His word to only one version. The different version quoted in the New Testament was a Greek translation of the Hebrew known as the Septuagint. God clearly lead His servants to use and quote the Greek translation as the word of God, as much as the Hebrew translation, even though they have differences. If that's good enough for God, that's good enough for me!

The NKJV is a good translation. You are drawn to it. That's probably the Holy Spirit guiding you. If you have any questions about a verse in the NKJV, you can always ask about it here.
