I'm watching a programme about a family. One of the children is complaining of being tired. His father puts it down to him playing on computer games at night instead of going to bed when told.

This thread isn't about children and their routines though. It's about adults and their routines.

Do you deprive of yourself of sleep in the week because you simply have to watch the latest episode of your favourite programme that finishes at midnight (when you have to be up at 6am)? Do you sleep most of the weekend away because you feel you need to catch up on sleep lost during the week?

Have you ever considered trying to develop a routine so that you get more regular sleep every night so that you can be more efficient during the day ~ every day?

I do know there are exceptions to how people sleep, such as shift workers and parents, especially of very young babies, but it seems that for so many of us, we are determined to act the way we were when we were 20 ~ and we're not there any longer!

So, if you're looking for ways to change your routine or if you've managed to change it, join in.

I am a triathlete and I work with a coach. He posts workouts. I know that the workouts HAVE to be done in morning, otherwise they aren't happening. And since I need to do each and every workout if I want to race well, I have no choice but to do them. So, the alarm goes off between 5:30 and 6:00am. I workout and then get home by 9am. I do school with the kids in the morning. Housework stuff in the afternoon. Relax in the evening. Most days, I'm ready for bed by 9:30 and in bed by 10:00. For me, staying up late is not an option. I simply can't stay awake!

Well-I'm a shift worker-so my "routine" depends if I am on a day or night schedule.

On my normal days-I am up @ 6:00a-in bed by 10:00p most nights. When I am on my night shifts-I sleep for 4 hours in the daytime while the kids are in school, then 3 more in the evening, after dinner.

I only follow one tv show regularly, and even then there are some weeks I don't watch it. (most weeks I don't watch more than a hour per week, sometimes 2, so its rare TV interferes with my sleep......)

I exercise different times depending on whether I am working that day (or night if you will) or not.

Ok, where am I right now? Ibelieve.com?

I am guilty of this, mostly from not wanting to face work the next day, so I will watch that one episode of Home Improvement. I will check one last time to see if there are any new messages. I will look up one last thing on the internet as well. So, yeah I am tired in the morning.

I am pretty good about keeping a routine. I have to get up at 5:30 to get to work... and I know I need 8 hours of sleep in order to be alert, so I go to bed at 9:30 (and I don't get home until 8:30!). Very rarely something will come up and I will stay up late or one of my kids will need to talk about something and I will stay up a little later. I would never do that for a tv show or anything, though.

On my days off, I will stay up/get up a little later (in bed 11:30-7:30), but still 8 hours, I don't sleep the day away or disturb the pattern too much.

I HAVE been having trouble sleeping the past few weeks and have been sleeping on the bus on the way to/from work. I still make myself follow the same routine, though.

There are times when I don't sleep well but I must be at work in front of my class dressed nicely and looking decent at 8 sharp on most mornings. So I have no other choice but to have a routine. I stay awake too late but then I sleep in when I find the time for it.
