This has been discussed little if any here that I can tell. But there have now been three special elections for congress in heavily Republican districts. Democrats have won all of them, despite Republicans spending heavily in all out of their limited budget.

Today's Electoral-Vote has the scoop:
http://electoral-vote.com/
(Article in question is May 14 -- if it's a later date, click Previous Report one or more times.)

Anyone have any take on what's going on here?

Perhaps the Republicans simply deserve to lose big for not representing true conservative values. After all, after Bush and the Republican congress were in charge, spending is wildly out of control. This is completely antithetical to what Republicans are supposed to want!

How does this bode for November?

The war, the economy, the utter failure in the last few years of the Republican congress to deal substantively with those issues and maintian a budget, the inherent American desire for change when we are feeling blue, even if such change will not change anything. Those are all factors.

While I still consider this result highly likely, frightening as the prospect is (and expensive as my move to Australia will be) voters seem to have a propensity to maintaining balance in the government; the two are not necessarily connected.

Actually I'm not sure this says much about the Presidential race. McCain is still holding up well in the national polls and could very well win. But in both the House and Senate, the GOP seems to be poised to lose quite a few seats on top of what they lost in 2006.

That may actually be an advantage to McCain. I think most Americans have enough sense to smell trouble when a liberal is President with a Democratic congress.

Balance is government is a good thing. A Democratic Congress and a Republican President is not the worst thing in the world. Can't be worse than the Republican President and Republican Congress 2000-2006.

Yeah, the mix I like is a Republican President, a Republican Senate, and a slightly Democratic house. This seems to force the Republicans to act like Republicans.

Interesting. My preference is a Rep President and House; Dem Senate. If that's not possible, then a Dem Pres and House with Rep Senate. I just don't like the Senate and Pres being the same whatever the party.

I like a Republican Senate because I like the judges they confirm.

But they have to come from a responsible president who knows what the Senate will or won't confirm. So I'm fine with a Rep Senate if the President and House are Dem. I don't like it when the House is the only one of a party cause the budget can really suffer; no one to hold them in check.

Well, yes, that is exactly why I like a Republican (preferably conservative) President and Senate; the President appoints the right judges, the Senate confirms said judges; the house provides enough antagonism to keep the Senate Republicans from getting full of themselves and drunk with power.

But who then keeps the House from going crazy, especially with the budget? Being re-elected every other year, if they have no one but themselves to answer to (they don't seem to think they answer to us), the House can be quite dangerous. So can the Senate who needs a strong president to keep it in check.

The House can't pass a budget by itself; and Republicans are much more fiscally conservative on budget matters when they are opposing Democrats than when they are rewarding each other.

I too prefer a Republican Senate to a Republican house.
BUT, I think they're all full of themselves and while they all may not be drunk with power, they're certainly thirsty for it.

I think all humans have the capacity for that when they are put in the position to acquire it, thus the government our forefathers created.

Agree.

Few turn it (power) down when offered or made available.

George Washington comes to mind.

Yes, in that (amongst other things), he was a superb leader.

The Senate has far too many members that are
Republican in Name Only.

The Republicans governed like drunken sailors until the political DUI hit in 2006. I'm not sure the hangover has worn off enough for average voters.

LOL. I'm trying to save up for Israel. I will be reserving my tickets for November anyday.

Wow. I think we agree.

I will say that if the Republican party gets back to its core values of fiscal responsibility, speaking softly and carrying a big stick on foreign policy, and comes up with some sort of long-term energy and environmental policy, they'd be winning elections in landslides.

quote:

I think this is a little early. I generally consider myself a Democrat and voted Dem about 75% of the time in the past two elections, but McCain has a lot of cross-party appeal, and I haven't made a decision on who to vote for, yet.

If McCain can convince me he'll be better at fixing our budget and energy issues than Obama, that would pretty much tip the scales in his favor. While I am concerned about McCain's frightening responses when he doesn't get his way- and what that means in terms of potential wars with China or Iran- this is mostly offset by the issues that I am sure certain off-topic posters will start dragging us through soon- as they do on any political discussion that involves liberals.

This is a great point.

I think the best way for us to get balanced budgets is for us to have a Democratic President and a Republican House & Senate. Short of that, if you don't have either Republicans or Democrats controlling all three pieces in the policy chess match, you at least get to avoid letting the pinheads (Read: far-left or far-right) control the fiscal or foreign agenda.

Good let the GOP lose... I am conservative through and through. As of this time, congress is ran by democrats and they have done nothing to this point. So to further drive the point that the democrats fail at running the country, let them have the next 4 years. I don't know that I care. They (representatives State and Federal) don't do anything I would like them to anyway. I vote, but as it turns, even those I vote for don't end up in the direction I voted them in for anyway!

Agreed.

As I've stated before, conservatives need to take control of the Senate.
We need to approve judges and preserve liberty. A two, three member majority isn't enough. we need eight to a dozen or more. And they need to vote as their constituents want.
