As usual when a popular technology emerges I'm always a few years behind. I was paying outrageous prices for my landline phone so to save some bucks I'm now using a cell exclusively. So I now no longer have a dial tone. I had only dial-up internet access, so I now go to the library to check email etc. (Funny thing is that I really don't miss surfing the web much.) Anyway, sometime in the future I will want to get DSL, or any high-speed access. So the question is: Do I need to have a dial tone for DSL? I still have phone outlets, a dozen or so cables, etc. but no dial tone for landline phone service. I've asked around but I can never get a straight answer.

Now you can have "naked dsl" which is dsl without the phone option through AT&T.

In the past you had to have the phone line and dsl. Make sure you ask for it, because its not heavily advertised.

Or you can try to see if your cable company offers Broadband Cable internet service also.

Around here cable internet runs $40 a month more than Verizon DSL.

DSL is old technology, out dated and not that fast compared to what is available today for the home user.

Any reason in particular you're looking for DSL? Do you already have cable TV? Or ?

No, I don't have cable. Cable TV is an expence I can do without. Right now, I'm thinking of even cancelling the ISP I get my email through and just use Yahoo and Gmail for free. And I probably wouldn't be looking for DSL specificaly. It just seems to be the most economical.
If its not obvious, I need to keep a tight handle on my $$.

If money is that tight.. how about just using the Internet at a local public library?

I pay 19.99 a month for my DSL service and it's plenty fast. 1.5 mps. I can download a song in 22 seconds
