I'm wondering what to do about this situation. I've got a silver crown on one of my teeth. I've had some pain with it, but when I saw my dentist last year, he said that it was just the way the crown fit in my mouth and be sure to floss there regularly.

Well, I'm having problems with pain there again and it's very sensitive to heat and cold, so I'm wondering whether to bring up the subject with him. My insurance won't pay for another dental exam until next year and I don't want to wait that long. He is a good dentist and I like him, so I don't want to change dentists, so what should I do about this problem?

Is it *just* hot and cold sensitive, or more than that?

You could just phone him, reminding him that you had discomfort last year after it was done, and say that it's still happening, and see what he says. Could be that he might offer to see you for free.
Though I am in the UK, where we have socialised medicine, we see our dentist privately - and I know he'd do a consultation for free if it related to past treatment.

I would be seeking out a second opinion. Good/friendly dentist or not... a second opinion hurts nothing.

It could be the way that it is fitted but things could have changed since you last saw him. I'd agree that it's worth a call to see what he says. When I paid privately, my dentist would give a free consult if it was from a previous problem.
