Does anyone listen to some of the bigger Christian radio stations like KLOVE or WayFM? I try to listen to them at work, and without fail day in and day out they play the same songs over and over and over again! I heard two Third Day songs within 10 minutes this morning on KLOVE. There are so many quality Christian bands out there, why do just the few most popular ones get all the air play?

Because they're afraid of playing an unfamilar song and having listeners turn the dial (or in modern terms hit the "seek" button or a preset). Its not just the Christian stations, at least in my area.

As far as Third Day, weren't they on the Tonight Show last night or the night before? Maybe the station was doing a sort of shout out for that accomplishment. Or the random button on the playlist made a mistake.

I tend to agree, it's not just the Christian stations... Here at my office, I have to listen to the local pop/rock station, 96 Wink f.m. and all I hear are the new song by KidRock and the song RockStar by Nickelback, (i think) If I hear either of these two songs again, I'm gonna splode.

(complete breakdown in 3...2...1)

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! (Throwing chairs and sweeping computer and files off desk in one singular motion!) Continue breakdown.

Any radio station (Christian or not) will play what people want to hear, as well as what is made available to them to play. KLOVE does have a music advisory panel that you can sign up for for free. Every once in a while, they send you a list of songs (along with a short audio clip), and have you rate them. They also sometimes ask questions about DJs, or listening hours/habits etc. It's a great way to have input into what they play.

All radio stations do this - even Mike and the other "random" station - they just grab the same limited playlists from all the other stations.

Go to shows, see bands, buy cds at independent music stores, meet people that are into other sorts of music who can introduce you to things.

I have worked at a Christian radio station for the past 2 years, and recently have just left it. It is one of the one's mentioned on this forum, but I'm not going to reveal which one.

The reason why songs are so repetitive, is because they think that a person is not listening to the radio for longer than a 2 hour period. Most people are probably in their cars for 30 minutes to 1 hour on the way to and from work, and maybe in the car for 30 minutes on their lunch break. After that, they probably go home and don't turn on the radio again.

But for those of us who listen at work, or longer than 2 hours, this is when you will hear the same song over and over again.

Also, all of the music picked to play on the radio comes from charts. They most likely will watch the charts and only add the top 20 songs.

As for the great music you know of but they are never playing...most of the time these artists are not on record labels, and I know the station I worked for would not play artists unless they had a label.

Finally, the station i used to work for just got a new Music Director, who i think will bring a lot of new music on to the station. I've seen a change already.

Sorry for the long post, but just so you know it bothers me as well!

Mike-FM being too repetitive? Hmmm, not from what I have noticed when listening to them.

[1] I echo the above post as to "why" you hear the same songs over and over on Christian statiions also.

[2] Which always begs the question, which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Interesting thread! I have definitely noticed how repetitive some stations can be and I don't even listen for long periods at a time! I've also wandered how much does the type of songs played have to do with who the director is?

The continious playing of the same small number of songs over and over and over again is exactly why I quite listening to Christian radio (except when I'm in the wife's car - she doesn't yet see the need for a satelite radio). It's really mind boggling, since there truly is a great wealth of really good music they could pull from. Instead it's the same 15 or 20 songs/artists ad infinitum. The same can be said for all the "classic rock" stations as well. Literally thousands and thousands of songs are out there, but you have to suffer through "Dream On" at least three times a day. Incredible. Long live XM!

There is a Chicago area radio station that doesn't seem to do this. WXRT 93.1. It's not Christian radio but they play a good mix of stuff from all different decades that isn't always from the top 20.

The good thing about Chicago radio is that there is a nice variety of stations with different genres. You can just program in 10 preset stations and keep flipping between them. (I can't stand listening to commercials on the radio). You are bound to find a song you want to listen to that way. KLOVE is good to have in the mix but I don't stay on them for too long. I firmly support them anyway because a lot of people get saved through their ministry. I'm glad they are on the air regardless if they play songs over and over.

Anyway, I suppose if you don't like radio choices, stick with the CDs (and/or MP3 player). That's usually what I do.

Is that the station on the "JACK-FM" format?

if you're at work, i recommend streaming air1. they're like klove's sister station, but their music has better variety such as klove doesn't play stellar kart or relient k, air1 does. they have much better bands on air1 so check it out sometime!

No, that's 104.3 here. They play good music also, but I'm not a big fan of some of their crass comments and "commercials" in between songs.
104.3 is mostly pop and rock from the 70's, 80's, and 90's...mostly top 40 stuff.
XRT plays a variety of genres, songs not from the top 40, and local bands.
