Hello All, I'm an IT guy at a small company (about 100) people. This is my second career after being in the Navy 20 years. So the last 2 years, we've been growing quite a bit and now have 4 people in our department, 2 Help Desk guys, me (server stuff, etc...) and a Manager.. My skillset has grown where I have become more valuable $$$ wise, and could easily get another job for more money, but that's not the problem.. #1 - It's a Christian owned company, what a blessing! A lot of great people here share the faith, even though no one in IT is a Christian (or that I haven't figured out yet...) #2 - The 2 Help Desk guys tend to fool around quite often ( i have to wear headphones half the time just to concentrate) In the last 2 days, I was informed by my Manager that one of these positions is going to be removed (It was added because of some projects). I believe this is a decision by the CIO thinking there is not enough work for both of them... We have also added quite a few people to the company and need the support. So, basically if this happens, I will have to go back and help out with Help desk issues, taking me away from alot of the skills/technology I am currently working with. I have already put feelers out there on the market and have a phone interview tomorrow. If the person does get cut, it will be at the end of the month. Question: Should I continue to stay here or is it time to move on? Is my pride in the way? I really enjoy what I do , but the Help Desk stuff really bugs me! Think of it as you are an advanced CPA, or whatever position, and now have to add to your list the basic tasks.. I really like working here, but I just don't think because of my age/skillset I can handle it... I am 43 years old... Help Desk people are usually 22-26 year olds..

Have you thought about giving it a try and seeing if it's as bad as you think? On the other hand, I am a great believer in when you are no longer happy in a job it is time to change jobs.

Reading between the lines Im hearing 3 things: 1) you are for the most part as far up as you can go in this company. 2) You are discontented with your job now, and that is being manifested in light of the upcoming change. 3) I'm hearing the voice of guilt. Your mention of the fact that this is a Christian owned company. As if somehow you were obligated to stay (and be happy) because of the owners being Christian. Seperate that from your decision. Look at this from a different angle: 1) You could be going backwards not forwards. That is not a good thing for a man of your potiential. 2) By you leaving the company for advancement elsewhere you create an opportunity for another person to 'move up' to your old postion. You are wanting to advance in your career, at least that is what I am hearing. Going backwards into a position that is 'beneith you' (I don't say that in a prideful way) will frustrate you and will be a constant battle to keep it from affecting your job performance. Pray about it. Just learn to filter out the voice of God from all those other voices.... like guilt, reluctance to change, fear, etc.

Believe me, I have been praying about it!.. The other voice I have to filter is out my wife ( just a little).. She wants me to stay on to the end of the year to get the yearly bonus... Leaving now probably means nothing.. but it's not all about money is it... Looking forward to my phone interview today.. I not going to change positions just to change... It would definitely have to be appealing...

In my job...I regularly do everything from the more advanced calculations to the "donkey" work that is normally done by the apprentices and trainees... BUT...I LOVE LOVE LOVE what I do...the senior stuff gets my brain tired...the simple stuff helps give me a break and energizes me... I am a marine designer (I am part of the team that is designing the newest class of aircraft carrier)...it's tedious at times, frustrating at times, stressful at times, hideously simple at timess and utterly mind-blowingly difficult at others... I LOVE IT.... Don't look down your nose at having to do the "junior" stuff...occasionally it's good to go back to basics...
