Hi:

My daughter who is nearly 4 1/2 and weighs about 35 pounds, is getting to tight for her car seat. I have the over the shoulder strap (5 point actually strap system). But, it is getting very hard to push in the metal part to hear the click. So, this is telling me to get some other type of car seat..but, what kind? Does my daughter still need the 5 point strap? Your help is appreciated.

Can you adjust the straps? Both my girls are still in 5 point restraint systems...we have Cosco Venturas for both...my 5 year old is about 40 lbs (she can go into a booster, but the restraints are good to 65 lbs) and my almost 4 year old is 33 lbs.
The straps are adjustable...there's a "tail" that hangs out of the front of the bottom of the seat that you can use to adjust the straps...
Personally, I prefer that the kids be in the 5 point harness until they REALLY don't fit anymore.

You may need a larger car seat or you may need to adjust the straps higher or looser. Look at the back--are there holes that are higher than the ones you are using? Is there extra "strap" that needs to be released so that the straps are looser?

It's really hard to tell without looking at them. My son was in his car seat w/5point restraint until he was nearly 6

The Britax Regent car seat accommodates up to 80 lb.

Go to www.toysrus.com and do a search on car seats. It has a large listing of car seats, including those for older children. The prices vary, and the listings include reviews. Evenflo makes a big kid booster seat that fits children up to 100 lbs. It is less expensive than many. I didn't look at the whole listing; there are several pages in the listing.

There are two ways for you to go.

You can get another 5-pt. system which covers a greater size (like the Britax although often these are expensive..do some research).

Or you can get a booster-style seat which will work from ages 4-8. These modify the existing car seat belt so that it fits a smaller frame.

With either one you should do a bit of research. I'm pretty sure your daughter would fit into a booster but you may want to check the lower weight limit on it. Often stores like Toys R Us will allow you to try out the various versions to see what would fit your tall, thin daughter the best.

I wouldn't recommend anything without the five point harness for any child less than 80 lbs.

My 8th grader is less than 80 lbs.

But really for the age/size you are talking about unlatch your carseat and see it the straps can be moved up. Most do. Also, check laws in your state about carseats/safety restraints. Our state is kids must be in a booster until they are 8 yrs OR 80 lbs.

You can also check to see if your area has a carseat safety program (check the sheriffs office) they can help you especially if you cannot afford a new seat and the one your child is in is not safe for him/her.

Our state law is 80 lbs or 4'9".

You can find out more at National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

My 37 pound 3.5 year old is in a high back booster and uses the regular belt. She has just learned to buckle it herself and NEVER unbuckles until I tell her to. I personally would not keep a child in a 5 point past the age of 4...but that's just me.

I would keep her in a 5pt harness, there was recently a young child who was thrown from a regular seat belt when their car was in an accident and killed upon impact A 5pt harness is definitely the safest thing for any child, and really even for adults. Anyway... The Graco Nautilus is probably your best option right now and it's quite affordable.

Somewhat off topic, but Ryanne's post inspired me to share a little factoid...Graco is actually owned by christians(and they donate quite a bit of money to Bob Jones University..I know, Bob Jones has its own problems, but still..)....so I think it's great when people support them...plus their products themselves are good (yes, I know I don't have kids, but I've done enough babysitting, nannying, and preschool teaching over the years to have learned some things about good and bad baby equipment).

P.S. In California the law is that a child has to be in a car seat until they are 6 yrs. old and at least 60 lbs., although there is some lobbying to make it 8 and 80.

Graco products are good, but I don't tend to like them as far as carseats go. Not because of quality, but because of other factors like top strap heights, height limits, and weight limits. They just don't compare well to the rest of the market. The Nautilus is a fantastic seat though...

A few reasons, some of which others may not agree with, but that's okay with me...

-I think they need to get used to a regular seatbelt before they are school-age. I'd rather they get used to that under MY supervision than a bus driver's.
-I have three in car seats now (and will for the next 4 years), and two older boys...a full van. I don't have room for the gargantuan seats that have 5 point harnesses for bigger kids.
-I find the highback booster to be just as secure for MY kids. The way my kids are built...they are big. With the exception of my stepson, who is a scrawny twig. He is 7 and we didn't take him out of a 5 point until he was 5. But he also wouldn't stay buckled on his own...

That's kind of funny, that overall, they wouldn't have great carseats, but then have one really good one (not disagreeing with you, Ryanne, just saying it's strange on THEIR part). Oh well, maybe they had a better engineer for that car seat, then they did for the rest of the car seat department.

Just to let you know.....Graco used to be owned by Christians. Over 10 years ago it was sold to Rubbermaid -and then Rubbermaid was bought out by Newell. Now all their companies are Newell-Rubbermaid. Many Christians still work there. We have only ever had Graco, because my husband used to work there, and they have quite a line of car seats for all styles and budgets. They make different lines for different stores.

Back to the question - you really can't do anything until you check YOUR state law. We keep our kids in the 5 point harness until they grow out of that particular model. For instance, it's not safe if their head goes over the top of it. Then we move them to high back boosters, and then we move them to regular boosters.

I think I reached that height and weight in 9th grade - maybe. The 4'9" is a suggestion in our state. Right now the law is 8 or 80 lbs. It used to be just 80 lbs (which I thought was high), but my doctor told me that they had to change it to 8 because of the obesity rate of children. Many children were hitting 80 pounds way before they turned 8.

Ah, bummer. As soon as I wrote it, I figured that could have changed by now, seeing as I got my info in 1993.

My best friend's husband is an engineer for evenflo, so I know there is at least one good christian in that company, lol.

And no, I don't think we have to only buy from christians..that would be impossible..but I do think it's nice to support them when we can.

Yes, and they are required to be used. Maybe because we have snow and slippery roads 6ish months of the year?

My 70 something year old aunt barely weighs 90 lbs soaking wet and is just barely 4'9" In fact she has to use a pillow to boost her forward enough to drive and has extensions on her gas and brake pedals.

Here in Indiana the law is as follows, paraphrased in my words: Under 8 years of age they must be in a car seat or booster seat. However if it is determined that a child under the age of 8 cannot safely fit into a car or booster seat they are to be restrained using the cars shoulder and lap seat belts or lap belts only if all of the car's lap and shoulder belts are being used for other children under the age of 16, except for the front seat. It is permissible to allow children over the age of 12 to ride in the front seat, but it is not encouraged. 4'9" is a recommended height, but it is not part of the law. All persons in the vehicle are required to use seat belts if available. There are exceptions of course - one that surprised me is cars owned by a funeral home when transporting people to and from graveside services.

It's actually quite an achievement and great day for some second graders when they hit that mark! Now my older three are no longer in car seats and my youngest might well be in her's a bit longer. She can legally be out of it in December, but she kinda likes being boosted up a little bit so she just might choose to stay in it a little longer.

Blessings,

Garsy

No seatbelts on our buses here, either.

Brandon was in a booster FOREVER. I never thought he'd get big enough, but he's five foot nine and 130 now.

way back when, in tx...only the special ed bus had belts...thats what jake rode, and they had seats installed for the little ones.. when we went on the larger bus (field trips) they would tether strap car seats into the regular bus seats

Are you sure?? The bus we were caught behind on Friday had kids standing up and wandering around in it WHILE it was going!
