The New Citizenship Test: Can Americans Pass It?
Never mind being smarter than a fifth-grader. Are you smart enough to be a U.S. citizen?
The Citizenship and Immigration Services has re-designed the citizenship test for immigrants who want to become naturalized Americans, revamping the questions for the first time since 1986.
The new test "demonstrates that they really are trying very hard to learn about this country. It will make them better citizens," said Chris Rhatigan, spokeswoman for USCIS.

But what percentage of the native born can match our feat? Probably less than 20%, which will make the current immigrants more able to make an informed choice than the native born.

I missed the one about president during WWI. I jumped the gun and picked Teddy Roosevelt. I forgot all about the Wilson doctrine and the League of Nations.

Did our ancestors (the ones who came to America via Ellis Island and other "legal" points of entry)....did they have to take some sort of "citizenship" TEST?
Of course, those ancestors who slipped in "below the radar" didn't have to bother with all that.........

When my granddad and grandma came in in the late 1800's and early 1900's there was only a physical required. There were no FBI checks, fingerprints, strip searches, 50 forms to fill out (multiple times for some forms) or citizenship test. These came from a xenophobic American view that we need to limit the amount of immigrants (especially those undesireable, non-European ones).
Testing came later

not to mention....there were NO thousands of dollars to spend on immigration lawyers and "fees" to "BUY" your way into the country....like there is today.
with all of the "requirements" and "costs"....if my family wanted to immigrate to America today, they probably couldn't....
Then again, Iam not sure that they came here "LEGALLY"/"officially" in the first place....way back then....there's really no way of most of us knowing that....(unless you you've done some good geanology work...)

I got a 99 out of 100... I couldn't remember who was President during World War 1... My first answer was Teddy Roosevelt, but that was too early. I couldn't come up with anything else.
Not a bad test to have, IMO...

"On April 14, 1802, Congress passed an act (2 Stat. 153) that directed the clerk of the court to record the entry of all aliens into the United States. The clerk collected information including the applicant's name, birthplace, age, nation of allegiance, country of emigration, and place of intended settlement, and granted each applicant a certificate that could be exhibited to the court as evidence of time of arrival in the United States.
The act of 1802 was the last major piece of naturalization legislation during the 19th century."
On June 27, 1906, Congress passed an act (34 Stat. 596) that expanded the existing Immigration Bureau to the Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization and put it in charge of "all matters concerning the naturalization of aliens Under the act of 1906, every petition for naturalization became a case for examination by Bureau officials.
This act also established the basic procedure for naturalization during the period 1906-52. The procedure began with the filing of a declaration of intention, which recorded the applicant's oath to the clerk of the court that it was his or her bona fide intention to become a citizen of the United States, to reside permanently therein, and to renounce all allegiances to other nations. Within a period of 2 to 7 years after filing the declaration, the applicant could petition the court for citizenship, presenting at this time the affidavits of two witnesses with personal knowledge of the applicant, stating that the applicant had resided in the United States for at least 5 years and possessed a good moral character. The petition then became the subject of an investigation and hearing before a judge. Officials of the Bureau conducted preliminary examinations and submitted findings and recommendations to the court. The hearing before a judge was the last step in the procedure, provided the judge found the findings and recommendation of naturalization officials favorable and satisfactory. If so, the applicant would take an oath of allegiance to the U.S. Constitution and laws and renounce all foreign allegiances, and the judge would issue an order of admission to citizenship and grant the applicant a certificate of citizenship. However, a judge could also order a continuance of the investigation or deny the petition, listing the reasons for the denial. A major change in this procedure occurred in 1952, when the filing of the declaration of intention was eliminated.

The test is a new phenomenom. Ellis Island was just an immigrant clearinghouse; an immigrant registration center.
The first instance mentioned of a "literacy test" (note, it didn't say citizenship test) is in 1921. Link #2 Most immigrants from Europe had already arrived by that time!

But there is a problem with the test!!
Q7 asks when the last date for filing an income tax return is and then lists April 15th; that answer is incorrect because the last date for filing, with extensions, is Oct 15th.

I got 100%, so I haven't forgotten anything. Of course I am a naturalized US citizen and had to take a history and civics test and study a ton of that stuff, so maybe I have an advantage over Americans. I do think that Americans should be made to learn as much--there is no excuse for immigrants like me to be smarter than Americans about their own history.

Went through the first 50 questions with my 5th grader and she got more then half right! Just looking through the last 50, I'm pretty certain she could have answered correctly at least some of them!
They're doing something right in those 4th and 5th grade classrooms at her school! Of course we didn't get to the history questions yet.

I believe in the eyes of the law there is a fundamental difference between "any Race" and "any species". But then again, if we give the Supreme Court and the DNC enough time that barrier my fall in the near future.
