Maybe he should sue Gutenberg's descendants since he printed the book first. Just so everyone knows: That's sarcastic.

When I saw your thread title, I just knew it had be this story. It is unbelievable! Sad, sad commentary on our current society! It will be interesting to see if this actually makes it to court. --Kat

In order to be thorough, he really should be suing Tyndale - I'm fairly sure that translations they publish have similar wording... The whole case is ridiculous. Hopefully the judges realize this.

To be honest, I'm a little bit surprised it hasn't happened before. And it could be worse. It could have been in Canada. Some of the renegade human rights tribunals in the Western provinces might even be sympathetic to this guy's argument. (The eastern ones less so.) That said, this guy's got a pretty tough case to prove. For one thing, there are other verses in the Bible - i.e. in the Levitican law - that are not controversially translated at all, except among certain liberal minority groups. For another, it's not Zondervan's fault in any event - they just have to say that they published the translation in good faith and that it was produced by qualified translation committees, not by Zondervan itself. It's a historical text and there was no intent to harm anyone, I'm sure. And for yet another, this man surely must sue - if he intends to sue anyone, which I don't usually think is a good way to resolve conflicts - the people who actually harmed him, not the publishers of a book used by the people who harmed him. I'm sorry that Fowler feels he has been harmed but I really do not think that the publisher of a Bible translation is responsible for that, even if the verse in question is translated incorrectly, which I'm not sure about. quote:

In an unusual case, the station that reported this actually did do its homework - it went to the library to check other translations, and it also tried to contact some professors. (This is in the article.) However, the claim by the man seems to be specifically that the people who harmed him used only Zondervan Bibles, so I can see why the case is limited, though I don't see why the case would be justified.

It's probably just to get attention. Fowler probably doesn't really expect it to go anywhere. He probably knows it's not Zondervan's fault, but he probably wants to hold the Bible itself accountable, and there's no other way for him to do that.

Fowler says his family's pastor used that Zondervan Bible, and because of it his family considered him a sinner and he suffered. Gee...according to ALL my Bibles, regardless of publisher, we ALL are sinners....
