I (jokingly) told my husband that we weren't going to turn the heating on until January this year to keep the fuel bills down.

As I sit here, shivering (in spite of two mugs of tea this morning) I have a couple of options to warm up:

1) I could go and do a DVD workout

2) I could wear my outdoor fleece

3) I could get my duvet and go and snuggle on the sofa with a book

4) I could get a hot water bottle and put it under my jumper

5) I could just go and turn the heating on????

What have you done??

We're thinking along similar lines, keeping the heat turned off for as long as possible, because of the impending increases.

I regard it as an achievement that we've kept it off till October 1st, so anything from now on is a bonus. We're having the boiler serviced (first time in 3 years! yikes!) on 21st October, so we're going to try to keep it off till then at least.

But it was SO chilly last night!! I put on a double lined hoody and thick fluffy socks and that seemed to do the trick. We have a sleeping bag rolled up in the corner of the living room that my dd dives into every morning as soon as she gets up for school (7.10am) and has her breakfast in, lol, so if one of us is really cold, we will use that as a cover. Unzipped, it can cover my dh and me on our couch, with the dog on top!

I do look forward more to cooking now (as it means the stove is on and exuding heat!), and also to doing any laundry (the tumble drier has a vented door, so all the warm air comes out into the kitchen!)

We will tough it out for now, until the frosts come anyway!

I'm wondering if there's any point my putting the heating on. Last year the oh-so-wonderful storage heaters I have didn't even get my lounge to 16C. I rarely have my bedroom heater on, but did this year because I was ill ~ but it was only on enough to keep the chill out of the room.

Not sure when I'll turn my lounge heater on. I think it's been November before. I've already started wearing socks all the time ~ I'm just miserable with cold feet and they get cold easily ~ and I hunted out my wrap (bought very cheap but is a wonderful investment!) last week.

Munchie has decided it's rather nice to curl up with me at night, and I don't think she moves, and that's really nice.

Oh yikes, is that the only heating you have?

We had storage heaters when we lived in the farmhouse on the Isle of Wight, but we had an Aga in the kitchen too, so that was a major constant source of heat too. The storage heaters just helped really. I don't know they'd have been much use on their own. It must get very chilly where you are. Do you just use the immersion for your hot water?

The heaters are the only source of heat I have... I've got the 'Superdeal' option, so they come on for 5 hours overnight and 2 hours in the afternoon. I save a bit of money because I only need to have the water on for the 2 hours during the day.

The leaded windows mean that I get plenty of ventilation even when the windows are closed.

May I suggest fingerless gloves too? You can still do most things when you're wearing them and they'll help keep your hands and fingers warm.

So is everyone holding out? I know that it's pretty cold here and colder in some other areas of the country. I haven't turned mine on yet, though I have felt the difference.

We gave in last Friday afternoon, and have the heat on twice a day, from 6am-9am and from 4pm-10pm, with the thermostat set at around 68F (20C). If it's sunny in the day, we turn the thermostat down to around 57F (14C) so that it doesn't come on.

Cats!

You women need a house-full of fuzzy, toasty-warm, foot snuggling kitty cats.

(which is, of course, our primary method of winter heat!)

We have one cat, Harvie, but she sleeps in a room on her own (she likes her privacy PLUS I am allergic to cats so she can't be with us a lot of the time)

agapetos has a cat too! I will leave her to tell you about her!

Now I really feel like a wimp. Here are some people all the way up towards the arctic circle who haven't turned on their heat yet and I'm down here in south Mississippi, and I've had my heat on at night for the past week!

Man, y'all are wimps!! We don't even have any heaters except space heaters. We have decided not to run them because they don't seem to raise the temperature, just the cost of the electric bill.

I turned my lounge heating on Friday and it was lovely when I woke up on Saturday. I chose to turn my bedroom heating on earlier this week when the room thermometer was on 9C.

I woke up this morning with Munchie curled up behind my knees, so they were nice and warm.
