Crossroads Music is now offering digital downloads of older projects by Karen Peck, Teddy Huffam, and others. Even the soundtrack downloads start at $1.99. Check out crossroadsmusic.com and the story on the Singing News website.

I order my product from the artists website or from the table at a concert so I know the money goes to the artist. The record company has already received a cut from the product on the website but more $$$ goes to the artist if bought from thier website or from thier table at concerts.

As a part time semi-professional artist I agree 100%. The record companies such as Crossroads play an important role in SG music but they are paid very well for the services they provide. Some companies are paid very well for services they never provide. It may cost a buck or two more but when I support another artist, I support them directly. If it's digital download you seek; give us a little time and we will have it on our websites. :-)

The Artists would be where they are if it weren't for production companies such as Crossroads, but there wouldn't even be companies such as Crossroads if it weren't for the artists. Bravo to the Artists and that's where I'll buy my product. How many times I've bought a CD for just one or two songs but found a favorite hidden in the other 8 or 9 I never heard before. I'm a diehard Ipod user but until the artists offer digital downloads I'll still purchase from them and manually transfer the songs. It's good to have a backup anyway in case something happens. I agree about the artists getting their fair share of profits.

In my original post I was mainly referring to out of print product that even the artists don't carry anymore that is now being made available. I do agree, hopefully more artists websites will offer the same service for oop product independently.

I don't disagree with supporting the artists but until they begin offering digital downloads directly I will use services like those offered by Crossroads or iTunes.

I guess I'm a fan of supporting artists directly most of the time, and supporting labels and bookstores directly at least occasionally.

ORIGINAL: AdamEdwards Hopefully, the other labels will follow suit and take a hint from Crossroads. I wouldn't be surprised if they do, but a secure shopping / mp3 download site isn't the sort that gets built overnight. But certainly, Crossroads is at the cutting edge here, at any rate by SG standards.

It has always puzzled me as to why some southern gospel recordings are released on cd and before you know it are out of print. However, other labels and genres seem to carry product for more extended periods of time. I'm speaking mainly of recordings made in the late 80's and 90's that would still sell today but have been discontinued. Provident Music (Benson Co.) released a few OOP projects for their Encore series, but they haven't had any new releases in the past couple of years. I guess our only answer for getting these older projects is a legal download site such as Crossroads. Hopefully others will jump on the boat.

Wouldn't it be nice for the newly reformed Riversong Records and Canaan to follow suit?

Like it or not, the market just isn't all that huge for such a small genre as Southern Gospel. If they make the price very attractive, like that Benson series of 20 Favorites ($4.98 cassettes and $6.98 CDs) that lasted for so long, the profit margin is reduced. The great thing about a download store is that the cost of upkeep is minimal and manufacturing costs are non-existent. It's great that Crossroads plans to offer out-of-print music at their site. I don't find it puzzling that CDs aren't in print from old Benson stuff, but I do find it puzzling that Crossroads is the only company so far making a serious effort at getting their current and older products online. This is especially baffling when you think of OOP titles that were originally released on CD...or later re-issued on CD at some point before going back OOP. It's a relatively simple matter to rip the MP3 from the CD and add it to a store. On older stuff...I can understand, because they need to re-master, etc. from the original masters that have been stored on tape. That takes more effort than simply ripping a CD.

It might not be as complex as an ISBN application, but they do have to apply for a tracking number and register an album formally. It's not as simple as ripping and posting.

True, costs are minimal. As I understand, it's more a time (delay) factor than a cost factor to apply for the tracking ID.

Crossroads Music has added some more titles it looks like for digital downloads. There are several oldies from The Hoppers, double album releases included. There are also several older Kingsmen titles from the Horizon Label, such as Singin in the Sun, Riding High, New Life, etc.

Why would that be necessary for a company that has their own online storefront? I know you have to do it for iTunes. I have recently put a CD out there which should be on iTunes soon. I'm not on a label, so I went through a company that takes care of the upload issues for me. They will assign ISTR codes, or whatever...but there was no extra fee involved. My point previously was that compared to a project that was never on CD, it should be relatively easy to get the material from the CD online.
