Whenever you hear about the major groups from the 50's and 60's you never hear that much of the Blue Ridge Qt from Spartanburg, SC. The group always had the tightest harmony than anyone during the era in my opinion. I have had the privilege to spend some time with Bill Crowe, former Baritone/Owner and Kenny Gates former piano player on several occasions to hear them reminisce about the days when concerts so packed they would sit them on the wings of the stage. I was just wondering if there's anyone out there that remembers this fantastic group.

I don't personally remember them, but certainly have heard of them. George Younce and Jim Hamill, among others, sang for them.

I have seen them several times when I first moved to the Roanoke area back in the late 50's. They used to apear at the Roanoke-Salem Civic Center at their all-night sings. I have a feeling Lynn remembers them also, as she used to go to the same singings.

They had a TV show in the Greenville/Spartanburg area and we always watched them. Saw them more times that I can count in the SC/NC area. In the 70s they toured a lot with the Oak Ridge Boys; both groups had "I Know" singled and they would have a 'song war' for the best response from the crowd on it!

Blue Ridge was a great group. I've heard it said that Jim Stewart was their bass at one time. Does anyone know if he's on any records with the group?

They had an album called Through the Years and I believe it said he was only with them for a few months, but I may be wrong. I'll try to find out for sure.

The Blue Ridge Quartet was one of the most popular groups in the 50's and 60's. We appeared with them on several syndicated TV programs during this time. We did a tour with them and the Plainsman Quartet through the midwest and we got to a city in the midwest and two little ladies came up to our bus and asked if Elmer Fudd was on our bus. We ate many a meal with Fred Daniel and will be attending the SGMA Hall of Fame Ceremony that will induct Fred into the Hall this year. A great group of guys. I see Kenny Gates and Bill Crowe at least once a year at some singing function or cookout in SC or North Georgia. Melvin Klaudt
