That was Abigail. The story is in 1 Samuel 25... but I'm not sure you've got the idea completely.

Nabal did not refuse out of fear, but out of selfishness and a sense of hoarding his property and his profits. This was a grave insult, even treason, because he had refused hospitality to David (and his men) who was God's chosen king. As David was gathering supporters, people who refused things like basic hospitality were doing so out of rebellion to God's choice for their ruler. This was more so, because David's soldiers had acted as a citizen-protecting army to these folks already, so they had already accepted the 'good part' of having David for king, but Nabal was refusing to do the 'bad part' of providing for the men who had rendered protection to his property.

Abigail was wise and faithful to God by acknowledging her king, regardless of her husband, who was in authority over her, but not as high an authority as a king. This was wisdom, and not rebellion, due to David's rightful authority.

So, this story is NOT any kind of basis for a woman granting hospitality to strangers when her husband thinks that it might be a risky choice. Unless the stranger is a king, the husband should be a respected person and his point of view (fear) should be accounted for and a different decision made.

throwing this verse in:

Heb 13:2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.
