Banners and standards are mentioned a fair few times in the Bible. Mainly regarding battle situations.

Do you believe there is any significance in this present age in using banners/standards in the following:

~ our worship times;
~ when we are in 'spiritual battle' situations;
~ or as church wall hangings, etc and if so what do you believe the significance to be?

Behind the pulpit we have two banners,

"Lost People Matter to God
Bring them in...
Grow them up...
Send them out..."

with names to bring in and

"El Fuego"(The Fire)from our revival(refocus)week in April.

It appears to me that the standards and banners were created in the wilderness so that everybody would know where they were to be. As anyone who has gone on a camping trip with a large group of people knows, these things are very helpful if not necessary.

A banner then came to represent a community and ones community provides protection. I believes this is why the Psalms to us that Adonai and His love for us are our banner. We are not to gain our security from our community or peers exept as they follow Adonai's ways. Also a banner informs others of the identiy of the community. The Scriptures appear also to tell us that it is Adonai's ways that serve as a banner to the nations. In otherwords, if we are following Adonai's ways we need no banner. If not a banner would be deceptive and therefore violate the ninth commandment.

So, I am a bit undecided regarding banners. If they serve as rallying points or directions, then I guess that they are acceptable. However, if they are meant to reassure us or identify us, I think they could be idols. I say this because, as pointed out above, Adonai and His ways are to reassure and dentify us.

Really intersting points Bluethread. I too believe we are not to gain our security from our community or peers (and I truly believe all who have so far posted likewise believe this) i.e. we cannot get a 'piggy back' into Heaven on our anscestors backs - we need to seek the Lord for ourselves regarding salvation and eternal security and therefore hiding behind the banner of what our family/relations/ancestors believe is not going to save us - only Jesus can do that and therefore 'Jehovah Nissi', i.e. 'The Lord is my Banner' has to be an individual's testimony.

Standards - Different patterned/coloured 'standards' tended to be used to identify who the individual tribes of Israel were and where they they were located within the large Israelite camps.

Banners- on the other hand, banners were held up and used going into warfare/battle. Some of those banners would have been the 'tribal standards'. Banners were also used for gathering points where the Israelite army gathered to await orders for the battle.

When the Bible talks about 'Jehovah Nissi', i.e. 'The Lord is my Banner" - it symbolizes the following:

~ God's presence
~ God's power
~ God's provision
