Anyone else use sites like pluggedinonline to check a movie's content before seeing it? We started doing this a couple of years ago, and it has saved us many times over. Even PG-13 movies often contain material that is objectionable to many adults. I know there are other review sites out there as well. I think one poster mentioned http://www.kids-in-mind.com in another thread. Focus on the Family is behind Pluggedin online. It is a very well put together website. It has reveiws for movies, TV shows, CDs, and video games. There is a PluggedIn magazine publication as well as the online site. I think it is important these days to be aware of the type of violence, sexual content, and profanity that are in a particular movie before we considering seeing it. Especially for people with children/teenagers. Here's the website for anyone interested: http://www.pluggedinonline.com/ Just curious if others have found these types of sites helpful.

I like using those, having recently discovered the pluggedinonline one, also screenit.com can be good. My favorite and the one I use most is http://christiananswers.net/spotlight/home.html

I don't read them much anymore, personally. But when I did it was screenit and pluggedin. I came to the conclusion that focusing on all the 'bad' in a film made it seem worse than it really was.

I use it once in awhile. I do have a problem though when they get descriptive with the sexual content since some reviews seems like you're reading an erotic novel with the words being used. I remember reading a review of a PG-13 movie one time and did watch it and I ended up scratching my head and just wondered if the reviewer had a sick mind or just being a bit pervert.

I do not read Christian based movei reviews, because it seems that if the film contains any action more violent than opening a can of Pringles, or a scene any more suggestive than a teen girl in shorts, then it gets labeled with an "Offensive" tag. Spare me, please.....I'm an adult and don't need someone else telling me what I should and shouldn't watch.....

I don't think it's a matter of someone telling you what you should, or should not watch. I think it's a matter of "here is information for people who want it". I do enjoy having that option if I'm unsure about a movie (espically with the ticket prices at the theater!). It's kind of like visting a new city. There are guide books available for people that want them to learn more about the city before they go. Or people can just go, and see what there is. Neither option is wrong, or right. That said, I do enjoy having sites like the ones mentioned, as well as crosswalk, so I can have the option of checking out a movie before I decide to see it or not.

I agree with musicboss: The point of the websites isn't to tell you what you "should or shouldn't watch." It's supposed to give you the information to make an informed choice on whether or not to see a particular movie. For example, if you are opposed to watching movies with nudity or repeated uses of profanity such as God's name paired with a certain curse word (as I am), it's invaluable to be able to look at a review of the movie to see if it contains such material. I'm not as interested in the overall "review" of the movie (basically whether or not the individual reviewer liked the movie). Instead I am concerned with what the movie actually contains. You can disagree with someone about whether or not the movie was well written, the actors did a good job, etc. But it's pretty clear cut as to whether a move contains nudity, what kind of profanity is to be expected, etc. And that's what I read them for. Without websites like this, I would have had to spend the $16.00 (two tickets), sit through fifteen minutes of a movie, only to find it contains material I would have avoided had I known about it. It's a win win situation in my book: saves me time, money, and seeing movies that are better off avoided.

I would like to add, as a parent I use these sites to help dermine if a movie is appropriate for my kids who are 3 years apart. What the 13 yo can handle the 10yo can't. AND the 13yo thinks it's ok to see a movie as long as it's PG-13. WRONG! Plus I just learned about fandango. I learned a long time ago just because the critics like a movie and give it high marks, doesn't always mean it's good. I like hearing from regular folks about movies - - gives me a better gauge as to if I'm really willing to spend my hard earned money at the theater.

I agree with this assessment, though I wouldn't mind a site that tells me if a movie insults my intelligence (e.g. King Arthur (2004)).

I don't use them myself. I am an adult and can figure out if the movie is going to be worth my time or not by reading the synopsis, who is in it, watching the trailers, reading reviews from regular people who have seen it, the genre and the rating.

I love Plugged In. I use it alot. Although, they are a bit overly critical. One movie, I forget which one, they just "dogged" it terribly. So I didn't go see it. Later, when it came on On Demand, I watched it. I LOVED it. Now I just take their opinion with a grain of salt. But it is great for content, like language, etc.

I enjoy reading Plugged In's movie, TV, and music reviews, even though they are definitely more conservative than I am. I've found them especially helpful when it comes to PG-13 and R rated movies - there are different levels of R rated movies, especially, and the reviews help to give me some idea of whether I'll actually be able to handle it or whether I even want to see the movie in question.
