Any good products for long hair that is frizzy? - 8/2/2008 4:45:15 PM

My hair is nearly waist length and straight and I keep it really trimmed. The ends are so frizzy and I am wondering, are there any good products to use or a maybe special way of trimming it to help it not frizz out and be smooth and silky???

Keep it moisturized. When it is "dry", it absorbs the moisture from the atmosphere, and that's what causes the frizz. There is no "special way to trim". Scissors/razors are all the same. They cut the hair. One cuts straight across and the other cuts on a slither angle. Doesn't have a thing to do with your hair being frizzy.
Nexxus Humectress is one of the best - put about the size of a dime on your dry hair - on the ends, and then comb it through - leave it in. It's the best thing you can do. Also, when you go swimming - saturate your hair first with clear water - that way it won't absorb the chlorine as much - as that'll really dry it out.
Just keep it moisturized. Plain and simple.

Actually, what I meant by the trimming part is like instead of having all the ends completely even, would it be better to layer or something? I never heard of making it wet before swimming but it makes sense.

Nope, layers make NO difference in frizzies - in fact, it'll just make them more noticeable. (For the record, I've been licensed since 1982. )
Keeping it moisturized and healthy (and GOOD moisturizer will work) is the best thing for it - I'm hesitant on putting oil on the hair, but you can try it, if you'd like.

What kind of hair do you have? That would change my advice.
Our hair protects itself by producing sebum (oil) at the scalp. Before the age of water from a tap women brushed that oil down the length to protect it.
Since we shower and wash our hair much more often we have to spend product time on hair that is longer than shoulder length. The longer it is the drier the bottom can get.
One thing you can do is get a really good, deep conditioner and make sure you leave it on the bottom of your hair for most of your shower. At least 5 minutes (more if possible) and then take a few minutes to rinse it.
Another thing you can do is add an oil. If you add the correct amount this does not make your hair oily. Remember, your scalp produces oil to protect your hair. Your hair is designed to soak up the oil. It makes it shiny and soft. Oils that will work: apricot kernal, jojoba, extra virgin olive oil, coconut, and many more. Just put a few drops on your palm and run the tail of your hair across it after a shower. Do this every time you shower until your hair does not seem dry, then stop. Don't do more than a few drops if you have oily or thin hair to begin with. I myself can't use more than a few drops without greasing up. My good friend's daughter has kinky hair and she needs a lot of oil or hair mayonnaise to keep it curled nice and non-frizzy. Different kinds of hair need different amounts of oil.
You could also add a little bit of conditioner or oil to a small spray bottle and fill it up with water. Spritz the ends with they seem frizzy. Smooth them with your fingers.
Those are the most common remedies for your problem.

I've started using Herbal Essences "Long Term Relationship" shampoo and conditioner on my (hip length) hair and have been very pleased with it. Much smoother and softer now.

I'm in no way an expert, having fine, flat, strait hair myself.
But my 2 year old has soft, fine, curly hair, and I use Garnier Nutris Weightless Anti-Frizz Serum on her hair.
It is an oil, but it's not as heavy or greasy as other ones. I towel dry her hair, wet my hands thoroughly (to minimize the oil sticking to my hands, and to make sure I can evenly distribute the prodict), and apply 1 pump full to her hair, avoiding the scalp.
Like I said, I haven't tried a ton of products, but this one has worked out best for us.
